Would you paint it or leave it bare.... what protection is there if you leave it bare so no oxidation occurs? or if you painted it whats the best route.... thx ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif)

You need zinc chromate primer for aluminum, aircraft supply stores like Aircraft Spruce or Chiefs Aircarft Supplys in Grants Pass, Oregon stock, sell and will ship all the chemicals you need for painting raw aluminum properly ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif) Prepping and painting aluminum is a three or four step process at least ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scope.gif) , not a two step like steel or iron ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif)

Eastwood sells it in aerosol and liquid. Automotive paint shops often have it as well.
I used the Eastwood primer on an iron block engine with lots of aluminum components and it is holding well.

oh and it is machined surfaces you have to worry about. the cast portion of the heads didn't oxidize, only the flat machined ends.
mine's the opposite...the Indy intake has oxidized a little bit, the motor plate has not. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif)

the aluminum will only oxidize if you drive your car through a salty winter road. I found out the hard way with the convertible coming back from Florida during the last week of February. I cleaned them off and they haven't oxidized in the last two years. bare aluminum heads. oh and it is machined surfaces you have to worry about. the cast portion of the heads didn't oxidize, only the flat machined ends. (Mopar "452" heads)
Not true. Moisture makes it oxidize. We never have salty roads here, yet mine oxidized after condensation got on it.
I just painted mine w/ Engine paint, looks great to me. CHIP
