I just installed a 7AL on my 12-1 496. It was cold natured when cold with the stock electronic ignition but now idles great on start up. My question is how long will a stock type round coil hold up? MSD suggests several different coils on their website but I do not have the budget right now. I am only running at the strip but have not made a pass yet with the 7al. Of the stock type coils would the old style or the open frame coils be best?

The 7AL will not run right with a stock type coil Been there done that recently on a motor on the engine dyno. The owner looked on a web site and found that the blaster 2 coil would supposidly work fine with a 7AL2 We finally pulled the right coil off one of his race cars and it made a big diffeence in how it ran, especially above 5500 RPM I have used the mallory 28880 coil for years on all of the MSD gold race boxes including up to the 7AL2. Mallory use to make the 28880 coils for MSD with there stickers on them with no MSD part #, the new little red MSD coils and the newer transformer coils work well also but not any better than the early Mallory 28880 on the motors I have test so far including up to 800 HP with 13 to 1 compression ratio

Thanks for the information. I am on a budget and prefer not to learn everything the hard way. Glad to know what works!!!
