For some reason, my mini-starter is not turning the motor. It appears to be cycling properly, but acts like the gear teeth are not lining up with the 727s flywheel or producung enough punch to turn it.

Has anyone experienced this? What should I be looking for?

Can we get the Mexican cartels to help us with our supply chain issues? They don't seem to have any trouble getting stuff from one place to another.

More information might help. What vehicle, what year, what engine?

Is the solenoid kicking the gear out to the flywheel to engage, or does the starter just free-spin?

Are both wires hooked up? Could your ignition switch be bad?

Maybe the "New" starter is defective? Could you take it back and have it checked?

What condition is the battery in?

70 Cuda, 340 6-pack motor

I took the inspection cover off and will look at things later tonight and verify the gear is engaging properly.

Wires are connect, new ignition switch relay just installed.

Sure, I could. But it arrears to be working fine when power is applied.

What condition is the battery in?
Battery was low and has been placed on a charger for over 24 hours. I may swap in my Jeep's battery and see what this does.

You might check down to the bottom of this tech info for some ideas. http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/elec/1.html

RobG,

I have the same exact problem. Recently a few weeks ago, my old style starter quit working. All I would get turning the igition on is "click" nothing else. Verified all connections, etc.... "click" The last time I had it out was a 100+ degree day and in addition, my built up motor gives off plenty of heat. I thought that I had heat soaked the starter and put it out of its misery.

Went to parts store tonight, bought the mini-starter for a 90's something Ram 360 and installed it. Clearance is good on top for connections and fits flush againts the block/bellhousing. I have in on a 383 with a 4-speed. I pulled the inspection cover off, and verified that everything is lining up fine. Nose cone is inside the hole, and the teeth do engage against the stock flywheel fine and mesh together.

When I hit the ignition switch, the starter is trying to turn over but it seems like it just doesn't have enough guts to turn the flywheel over. Not sure what the problem is. Battery has plenty of power.

I'm taking it back tomorrow most likely and getting a stock original replacement I suppose. I attempted this one time a good few years back with a junkyard mini-starter with the same results. I thought it was a 4-speed issue, but it seems you are having the same problems with your 727? I'm stumped at this point.

Check your cables for voltage drop and don't forget the engine ground strap. You can have 11+ volts at the battery while cranking but the starter might be seeing next to nothing... measure right at the starter stud.

I had so many hot start issues with the 440 Source mini-starter on my bracket car that I went back to the stocker. Problem solved!

I don't have the 440 Source mini but I do have a mini and it doesn't like to work after a long drive. You have to do the old Chevy hammer long screw driver to it to get it turning. If/when the front end get's rebuilt and the manual steering goes in that starter is coming out.

Before I take it back I'm going to run a ground strap directly to the starter and try it again this morning. The positive battery cables are only a few years old. Other than a extra ground strap, I would have no clue why it will not work. Fits flush, connections are good, etc.

Well guys . . . The battery had a bad cell. Not enough juice to turn the starter. I dropped in a battery from my Jeep and she fired right up!

Happy to hear you solved it.

The mini-starter in my '71 Charger worked from the first time I turned the key. The problem with yours seemed baffling.
