read an article in the latest Mopar Muscle that AM equipped cars came with a telescoping mast antenna and AM/FM cars came with fixed mast antenna's. To be honest, I thought it was reverse. So if a 71 E body that has a single dash speaker and a solid mast antenna, would that be an AM/FM radio ? Then what antenna would a 70 E body come with when equipped with a AM 8track 3 speaker dash and split box ? Thanks-Joe

I know it does not answer your exact question but my 70 Cuda has an AM radio, single speaker dash and it came with the telescopic antenna.

It was more of a change over from telescopic up to about 70 or 71, then solid was used after that.

To my knowledge, which radio your car was optioned with has nothing to do with what style antenna the car had. It was a build date /assembly plant/ vendor supply issue.
I am not sure what the change over date is
for each assembly plant.

I've owned seven Challengers with the R35 AM/FM mpx radio option, six had telescopic antennas, including my R/T S.E. with a 723 SPD (July 23rd 1970) I bought that car in 73 so I'm fairly confident that the antenna was original...

No solid antennas on A, B or E bodies until '72.

Amazing how an unchallenged lie can become the absolute truth.

The January '72 issue of the 1970-'71 Parts Catalog lists:
for manual antenna (non-power)
2889 934 76.5" mast for '70-'71 a, b, c, e-bodies
2889 919 60" mast for '70-'71 a, b, c, e-bodies
3513 745* 31" mast for '71 c-bodies (* = part not listed in any previous parts book)

I do NOT believe the fixed mast is correct on any '70/'71 a, b, or e-body.
Doesn't the '70 Challenger "owner's manual" show recommended lengths of adjustment for best reception - AM vs. FM??

Which issue of Mopar Muscle??

Actually the solid mast antenna was standard on all 71s it was introduced in 71 and was standard on all cars.I worked at a Chry. dealer then - out here in the sticks the solid mast wouldnt pick up radio stations as well as the earlier telescoping antennas . we changed some to the earlier style for customers

6bblGT - the latest one-just got it last week -already recycled it - kept the article with the antenna - written by the guy who does the Summit Racing trivia questions - his name is Karl Pippart (?) I believe - Joe
