Now that I own 2 wagons,one being a 65 Fury III and the other being a 72 Custom Suburban,I have been looking for related items.

Question(s) I have are about the whole "Suburban" namesake.

Ive seen late 50's Plymouth Wagons with the Suburban namesake,my 65 Fury Wagon Doesnt have it and my 72 DOES have the namesake.

Does anyone know the history behind the whole"Suburban" name for Plymouth? Why was the name offered,taken away and then brought back?

Did it have anything to do with Chevrolet also having the Suburban Namesake. Which Suburban came first,the Chevy or the Plymouth?

May be a long shot, but its just a bit of useless trivia id like to know.

The very first use of the Suburban name was by Dodge, in 1933, for the "Westchester Semi-Sedan Suburban", a truck based station wagon. Plymouth started a year latter, as did Chevy. The name appears to be more descriptive of wagons in the 30's and 40's, used by Chevy, Plymouth, Dodge, Nash and Hudson among others. Plymouth and Chevy kept using it the longest. Plymouth appeared to flip flop on use, sometimes the wagons were separate Suburban models, sometimes not. My experience is this is some brand/ marketing or advertising manager trying to emphasize what they thought was important. Plymouth stopped using the Suburban name ("abandoned") in the late 70's (with the demise of the C bodies?) and that allowed Chevrolet to register Suburban as an exclusive trademark only in 1988(!).
BTW, could you post a picture of the tailgate on your wagon? I am looking to see if the 65/66 Plymouth gate is the same (except for trim) as my 66 Town and Country's rusty and hard to find one.

Is the Plymouth emblem between the tailights mounted on sheet metal; i,e,. is there a bar underneath that molding? I attach a picture of my wagons tailgate. See the way the same area curves inward? That appears to be to the only big difference, and it is covered by the trim possible.

The '65 Parts Catalog shows 8 different c-body tailgates (P-4, D-2 & C-2)
differences being:
Plymouth Fury I & II vs. Fury III
pull up inside handle vs. knob/slide inside handle


The '66 Parts Catalog shows an additional 4 different c-body tailgates (P-2, D-1 & C-1)
differences being:
Plymouth Fury I & II vs. Fury III

Hollander interchange manual implies the "knob/slide inside handle" version to be the same for Chrysler between '65 & '66 with the exception of taillights & trim.

It appears they are NOT direct interchanges Plymouth vs. Dodge vs. Plymouth
but
glass is the same
hinges are the same
inside cover is the same
power widow mechanism is the same
tailgate opening sill is the same

I tried to find part numbers for the sides of the "tailgate jamb" but couldn't

It looks like you could use a solid Dodge or Plymouth tailgate to repair/piece together one if the Chrysler units are made of "unobtainium".

Found this on the bag. Looks like any fury wagon was a suburban in 75.
