I have a new oil indicator that that I purchased new in 1979. The part number on the tag is 3614982. It was supposed to be for a 70 Hemi but the indicator is way too long and it has a black rubber handle. 30 years later I am finding this out. I guess I can't take this piece back to the dealer. Anyone have any parts book reference for this number. Thank you for the help.

I just went out to the garage and checked my 1970-71 parts book dated January 1972 and it shows the 1971 Hemi oil indicator as part number 3614982 which is what my parts tag has on it. But comparing it to a reproduction tube and indicator mine is about two inches longer where it goes into the pan and about 2 1/2 longer at the top. Any ideas?

just curious,is the part # stamped into the indicator , or is on a seperate tag ? I have a dipstick that has a thick black rubber handle/pull but no part #on it - it was in the tube when I bought the car 15 years ago - have since picked up a correct NOS indicator - thanks - Joe

Joe,
It has the normal paper tag with the part number, dealers name, date etc. It is just wrapped around the indicator.

I wish I knew. I ordered 2 using the same number as you did, 3614982, and that is what I received.

Maybe someone else will jump in with an answer.

OAL = 27 1/2"
Handle Length = 6 1/4"
Flat Section = 21 1/4"
Full Mark is 1 3/4" from bottom.

How long ago did you order yours? Like I said in my earlier post I bought mine at the Dodge dealer back in 1979. Either Fremont Dodge or Edgren Motors, I got to look at the tag again. All these years I assumed it was the correct part. Now that I need to use it, it looks like it will not work. Well another part to look for at the Fall Fling or next years Spring Fling. Thanks for the information.

Joe, did you ever try to fit it to a block and oil pan to see if it will work with a stock hemi pan?

my car has an oil pan with the # 854 stamped into it, according to GG's white book, shows up for a 1972 B body 440HP. I don't know if it's the original pan for my motor - my car was built May 26 of 71, but ID stamp on front pad shows 1 8 . Pan could have been replaced at one time, probably more than likely. But the dipstick tube that this stick was in doesn't look like an original - have to find the tube and take a pic. But it was in the motor when I gotthe car, those pics I do have.

for what it's worth, just measured the 3614982 stick I have against the NOS 3577245 71 44O-6 E body stick a picked up from a member here, and the marks are just the same. The 3614982 is longer overall, but the indicators are the same. Guess it's taller to clear the taller hemi v/c's to make removal easier ? Joe

Joe,
Those are interesting photos. Thanks for your time. Does anyone know when Chrysler stopped making the "Brick red" handle Hemi dipstick? Must have been before 1979 as that is when I purchased my "unknown" dipstick.
