Start with the easy stuff, try a new flasher unit. They work by the heating effects of electricity on a bimetallic strip; as it heats it causes the strip to bend and break the circuit, then as it cools it returns to original and makes the circuit to start the cycle over again. It's not too unusual for things like that to break down and change their characteristics, plus if you've put different lamps in or have a little corrosion, etc. it will change the current flow and alter the properties from design. An added lamp or two, say like trailer lamps will cause the same effect. At any rate, start with the 2 - 3 dollar part first, if that doesn't fix it it's time to look at the current draw of the circuit and/or the voltage supplied.

Not sure if yours is the same but my 67 coronet had the original square flashers.. I purchased some NOS and they worked about the same.. I replaced both of my flashers with modern round ones and they work great..

I have been told replacing the original bulbs ( can't remember the number) with newer 1157 bulbs will draw more current??

And now for the correct answer. Round or square, flashers are a crap shoot and they CAN CHANGE WITH AGE.

(Just imagine how worn out YOU would be if you had to sit there and flash lights all those years)

Anyway, round or square matters not. Just get a heavy duty flasher and be done with it. Easy.

I remember back in the day we would put in the Heavy Duty flashers when we pulled a trailer for the extra load on the unit. When the trailer was disconnected from the vehicle the turn indicators would flash faster because the extra bulbs were no longer attached to the overall system. Just my

Actually thats backwards as when you unhook a trailer with extra lites on it the turn signals will slow down. The reason for a heavy duty flasher with a trailer is because with the extral lites the flasher heats faster and the lites blink faster. The heavy duty flasher takes longer to heat the bi-metal in the flasher so it flashes slower. When you take the extra trailer lites away it will flash slower. Just like when a bulb blows out on one side and then that side slows down on the older cars like our muscle cars. Newer cars are different. Ron

um actually I think you have that backwards.

When a bulb goes out on my car a 65 coronet, it blinks faster on that side.

HD flasher takes more resistence to flash. Fewer bulbs mean slower flash. Andrewh, that may be caused if the broken filament shorts to the other filament or the bsae.
