What is the correlation between wheel width and section width of tires?

Say you have a tire that has a section width of 12 inches on an 8 inch wheel. If you put the same tire on a 10 inch wheel how much does it usually change the section width? Make it bigger, smaller, etc?

Thanks

It will make it smaller. I have 29.5 X 11.5 MTs on the Duster and they did section on a 10in rim.. I think it was 12.9 I put them on a 12in rim and the section was 12in

Not always so, thumperdart mounted a set of bias tires on a 12 inch rim versus a 10 inch rim and the tires hit the inner and outer fenderwell mounted on the twelves and not on the ten inch rims I have had the same results on my ET Street Radials, 315x60x15 mounted on 12 inch rims hit the outer quarter panels if I leave the ride hieght the same as it was with the same set of tires mounted on ten inch rims with the same ratio offset. Ten inch are 5 3/16 on the back side, twelves are 6 3/16. to make the twelve inch rims and tires fit I have to raise the rear up around 2 inches higher, luckily the rear suspension is a coil over hook to a multi point attacment that I can raise up and down with two bolts and two jacks
