I assume whatever the case, I should probably replace the bushing/converter correct?

Any step by step guides available in how to replace the bushing?

Disasemble the pump by unbolting the six bolts holding the stator support to the pump.
Drive out the pump bushing with a bushing driver. Use bushing driver to install new bushing. Using the side of a round screwdriver, peen the bushing at the notches inside the pump.
Note, I actuall use a cam bearing driver as my bushing driver
Install the seal at the same time, lube the bushing and seal, and re-assemble the pump.

Thanks, I've read I should have the transmission vertical when removing parts on it correct?

It does not really matter, it may make it a bit easier? The real tip is to loosen the front band adjusting nut, ant then turn in the adjuster so the front band holds the drums in place when the pump is removed.
