Here is the story..my 69 Coronet with a 440 needed some bottom end attention due to a bad oil pump. Its all buttoned up and back in, everything is hooked up. When I first tried to start it, it tried to start, but had a small fire at the carb, and sputtered and coughed through the carb. SO, timing is wrong? I pulled the distributor, put it at TDC on #1, lined cap and rotor up, replaced all the plug wires in correct firing order...nothing. Tested the plug for spark, its sparking fine. Kept messing with timing advancing and retarding..nothing. Pulled the #1 plug, it was dry. Pulled #7, and gas came out of it! What is going on here. Is timing still off? What am I doing wrong? This is driving me nuts. I'm sure I have everything together right...but it will not even attempt to fire. HELP!!!

You do have fuel?? I like to pre set the timing close with a timing light cranking it over to get 10 to 16 advance. need a friend or a kicker button key on.
and last but not least for the big three...Do you have compression?

What all did you have to do on the bottom end? Did you need to remove timing chain and gears? Pull engine?
You did go counter-clockwise for firing order when installing plug wires, right?

Yep..have fuel. I pulled the motor out, because my oil pump shaft sheared off, seizing the oil pump, and the idiot light did not go off...so the bottom end locked up. Found a shop rag in the oil pan..long story short...had to redo bearings. Did not pull timing chain. Followed the diagram in the shop manual to reinstall plug wires (even double checked them against my 69 Charger to make sure everything was in the right order. Still nothing. I guess new plugs couldn't hurt..though when I pulled the number 1 plug and test fired, it sparked pretty well...
If the plugs are gas fouled enough it won't start with standard ignition.

Pulled #7, and gas came out of it!
If you had fuel coming out of your plug hole make sure that you have compression. Pull all the plugs, spin the engine over with some oil in the cylinders and replace plugs with NEW plugs and try it. Could hve washed the cylinders down with gas and now lacks compression oil in teh cylinders will help.

I'd pull the plugs, spray something in there(lightly),& spin it to lube the walls & as said new plugs & get the marks on TDC #1 compression & retime the dist/check the firing order.

Air, fuel, ignition, and compression, in the right amounts, at the right time. Verify those six items and you should know why it won't run.
Actually,that's only four!

I bought a set of plugs years ago put them in my 440 Imp and tried to start it.I went crazy for like 2 hours checking everything.Wouldnt start even though it ran before.Pulled them and installed a used set and it fired right up.Checked the new ones and only 3 were firing.Id put some oil in the cylindesr as suggested and let it set for a while then crank it over with no plugs. Then install a new set and see if it starts.Rocky
