Hello all,

I've got an 8 3/4 rear axle out of a 73 D-200 truck. I'm going to install it into an 80 D150. The current axle is an 8 3/4 489 case unit, open rear. I'm going to go junkyarding and see if I can find a center section with the clutch type SG in it already. Rebuild that unit and put in my axle. Which code should I look for to save crawling under cars/trucks in the junkyard ? I did take a look in the tech section and didn't find anything on it.

Thanks.

There are no codes that designate sure-grip.

Once in a blue moon, you may find a sticker on the door that reads "T/C lock".

the 60s trucks said suregrip right on the doorpost plate. Not sure when they stopped that. usually 4.10s or 3.55s.

Some half ton trucks had "sure-grip" tags on the third-member. Occasionally, the doorpost tag designated sure-grip with the wording "TC lock". Most half-ton trucks equipped with traction differentials did not have any designation, however.

Cars had the tag too. Clutch type was only available through the 68 model year. But that is not saying that someone hasn't put one in a new model. Check this out: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MOPAR-REA...d=p4506.c0.m245

Clutch sure-grip designation:

1958-early '60s:
Car or truck sure-grip had ratio and "S" stamped into pad at bottom of third-member casting.

Early '60s-1968:
SOME trucks had round sure-grip tag bolted to third-member stud (most didn't)
MOST cars did
MOST vans did

1967 and 1968 cars will tell you on the fender tag under the AX code. There will be a single digit number and if it`s followed by an X the car was originally equipped with a clutch SG. This applies to `67 and `68 ONLY. The number gives you the ratio.

got to remember,they have not made a 8 3/4 since 74,and by now any thing could have been swaped in to it..

Its all ways best to pull it and have a looky see

I have found 8 3/4s in stuff that did not come stock with it,I have found sg in stuff that you would not think needed it,and I have found them to be swaped around a lot over the yrs

check them all IMO

suregrips could be orderd by the first owner,and not across the board for that line of vehical

Yep, '67-68 have the AX code on the fender tag. If it is a double digit, then it has a sure grip (second digit under the X is almost always an 8).

1 = 2.76
18 = 2.76 w/SG
2 = 2.94
28 = 2.94 w/SG
4 = 3.23
48 = 3.23 w/SG
6 = 3.55
68 = 3.55 w/SG
7 = 3.91
78 = 3.91 w/SG
