I have an 8.75 from a '69 Coronet 440 wagon under my '40. Width was fine, spring perches had to be changed for the old springs, since they are narrower. You also want to get the angle right, mine need to be redone.

Cherokee axle also gives the option of disc brake rear with e-brake.
And although not mopar the Ford 8.8 is another option as it can be found under everything from mustangs to Explorers at various widths.
