i have a 1950 plymouth business coupe. i want to update the rear end. what is the best fit for it? an a-body 8 3/4? i can't afford to spend big money on a custom fit 9 inch or dana. what has anyone else used?

Measure the spring centers and the overall width from drum-to-drum and compare the specs to those in the archives.

I have an 8.75 from a '69 Coronet 440 wagon under my '40. Width was fine, spring perches had to be changed for the old springs, since they are narrower. You also want to get the angle right, mine need to be redone.

I'm using an 8 1/4 out of a 79 chrysler LeBaron in my 40. I was going to use a 8 3/4 rear out of a 70 Barracuda Gran Coupe but couldn't afford what people were asking for a center section as all I have is the housing and the axles.

Used 68 Coronet rear end under the 36, no changes needed!

Something that may be a bit easier to find the local yards is a Cherokee axle. They are supposed to be good too. Make sure you bring your tape measure!

Cherokee axle also gives the option of disc brake rear with e-brake.

And although not mopar the Ford 8.8 is another option as it can be found under everything from mustangs to Explorers at various widths.

Using a 68 Roadrunner 8 3/4 rear in my 48 Plymouth P15. Width was pretty close...just had to relocate spring perches, and fabricate new spring plates because the axle tube diameter is larger, and the old ones would not work. Just need to figure out the proper pinion angle prior to welding the spring perches to the axle tubes.
