Is it feasable to remove a flywheel that has damaged teeth, and replace it with a good one? I don't want to replace my 9.5" Dynamic, but a couple of teeth were damaged by a sticking starter bendix! Thanks Guys! RandyB

Randy, torque converter shops do it all the time, I've
done it myself before(using a lathe)

Yes, i have had it done a few times at a company called PHD converter. 1414 industrial dearborn, 313-841-3457. Talk to Larry. They use a ring gear that has hardened teeth, so it is less likely to fail. Usually i was able to call ahead and have it done while i wait. The place isn't much to look at, but they do good work, and its usually easier / faster / cheaper then shipping it back to the manufacturer.

Randy, if its just a couple of teeth that are damaged, I have welded them back up a touch and reground them with a dremel and file to match the other teeth perfectly.

Now if they are completly stripped off, thats different, then I would regear it like mentioned. mike

I had a section of the ring gear let loose on a 9 1/2" converter about 5 yrs ago - it was only anchored with the 4 lugs that the conv bolts to the flexplate. A whole section came loose between the lugs. After cutting the remaining ring gear off, we added 4 more lugs to help brace the ring gear. Then we installed a new ring ourselves - I have access to a large enough lathe that we could trim/true the lugs and welded the new ring on. No vibration or problems since. Now, anytime that we get a conv that only has 4 lugs, we add the xtras before it gets installed. As suggested, any competent conv shop should be able to change the ring gear.

Thanks Guys! I've been thinking! Since I'll be pulling the converter(winter project)maybe I could send it to one of the shops like PTC,Ultimate,or Dynamic, for an increase in stall speed! Flashes to 4600 now. Maybe add a few hundred RPM??? RandyB
