Does anyone run a trailer mounted weather station and if so what brand? I am looking at an altronics trailer mounted unit hooked to my laptop using the crew chief pro software. Can anyone recommend any better bang for the buck out there? I really just need something that is a good et predicter in varying weather conditions.

Crew Chief pro is very good software. I had an older version back in 03 and the stuff it could do then was amazing. I can only imagine what he has come up with now. Great people to deal with as well, all racers.

His system works well and wins lots of races, plus it has the added benefits of run tracking, expenses, tech card print outs etc....

Family Software Crew chief pro gives 4 predictions and you can guess which one to use. family Software one prediction within .002
I use the pager system which you can have page you as often as you want in case your sitting in the lanes for a hour. Also it logs everything for you.

I use the Altacom with pager, anemometer and Crew Chief Pro software. Works really well.

I use a wet finger in the air

Seriously a trailer mounted weather station is on my to get list. Lord knows the finger is a little inaccurate sometimes.

I'm currently using a Speed Tech weather meter and looking to step up to a Tag. I want one that will give me the weather at the line. Not the trailer. You'd be surprised how different the weather can be in just that short distance.

This is where you are wrong, you dont want the weather conditions at the line. You would be better off having someone at your trailer calling you on a cell phone with the weather as when you leave the line it changes.

Bill, the temp at your trailer is what it is, unless you have the speed tech setting in the sun or let the radiant heat from blacktop get to close. This is why the trailer mounted are better because they use a fan inside to get the real conditions. I have seen the hand helds with the fan inside but it would have to be put up high to stop the radiant heat from affecting them. The heat from the engine will also affect the air into the carb and this is why you see a car pick up by sealing the carb, its cooler air.

I was refering more to humidity and pressure being different. Humidity more than pressure.

I use it mostly for the Jr as Hum can have a great impact on fast it will run.

I guess the main thing in what ever weather staion you use is use it consistantly.

Yeah I understand what your saying and maybe Iam not explaining it well. The Temp at the line is always higher because of the cars and people and burnouts. The temp at your trailer is the actual temp - down track. Leave it at the trailer.I watch people at the track putting the hand helds on the roof of cars in the sun and they dont read correct.Soon as you leave the line the temp changes.Sorry if this is to long.

I carry mine with me and take my reading in the lanes
before I strap in.... if you do the SAME thing
all the time it doesnt matter, you enter the ET based
on where you took the reading... but the car is using
the air thats on the track not back where all the
grass and trees are(if your that lucky)

Would'nt the weatherstation change with the amount of cars in the lane? More cars running and as the day goes by there's less?

I usually walk up near the line and take the reading
and check the wind then go back and write it on....
the unit I have doesnt have a wind meter so I check the
flags for speed and direction then based my Tag reading
adjust it for wind

Racerv351 Yes it would change it.When you have a hundred cars producing heat in the line of course it will affect it. The closer to the line the more the temp goes up, but leaving it changes.A easy way to find out is to take a reading at the line and then down track and see if its the same.It will not be the same.

Mr P You leave in bad air and it gets better and it would be the same air as your trailer reading if you have a fan in your unit which I believe the Tag does.Take a reading from your trailer and the track and see if its the same as the line,or staging lanes. If your dialing in from the line I will guarntee you will be more consistant from the trailer.Give it a shot and if Iam wrong come on here and tell me so.

I've checked it at the trailer VS the line and yes
they are different but you cant tell me which is
more correct... might be fine if your trailer was
parked at 1/2 track along the fence closest to the track.
Either way if you take the SAME readings all the time
its immaterial... just as long as its the same way

As stated doesnt matter where its taken, as long as its the same each time. I have done both.

But I hold several numbers so it really doesnt matter too much. But when I was T-stop racing it was VITAL. I loved my crew chief pro.

In the 10.90 race I won at the CFR divisional, it ran 10.902 in the semis, and 10.902 in the finals.

Your trailer will never be far enough away from the track to make any difference in weather. Your not racing at the trailer or the lanes, your looking for consistent readings with the least amount of artificial influences. Taking it in the lanes or at the line will never be as consistent as a trailer mounted unit. There are too many variables in the lanes, # cars, location of the sun, radiant heat off the asphalt will vary with sun location, clouds, etc. There will be less artificial disturbances at your trailer.

Thanks I felt so alone on here. Ambient air changes is what is used for predictions and there is no ambient air at the line. The other thing I would add is which weather recording devise tells you in the directions that it doesnt matter where you take a reading at? I havent been racing for 30 years but I can read directions.

i have the altacom with pager and crewchief software. never used it to it's full potential i hope to change that in the future. currently outfitting my new trailer hope to be racing in the not too distant future and start using it again. like anything else you get what you pay for.
