I've got all my cluster issues worked out except one. When the car is running the ALT gauge is pulling to the NEG. side like its not chargeing. When I put the meter on the battery it shows to be around 14.50-14.60 with the car running. I thought that was correct. Do I have a bad gauge?

Do you have the red and black wires hooked up correctly on the back of the ammeter? Are they reversed?

Swap them.I dont know why anyone would run the amp gauge anyway. They are the weak link in the wiring.Rocky

I agree but they complete the circuit. How would do away with it? You did mean swap the gauges not the wires right? I may sound stupid but Mopar electrical systems confuse the living hell out of me.

you could swap the wires around and see what it does. But most people bypass it. Just take one of the wires and put it on the other pole so both are on the same side.
Or just join the 2 or 3 wires together in a connector.
Doing this doesn't really solve the problem, because usually the ammeter is NOT the problem. Usually it's the wiring, the connections in the firewall connector and other places. If you are going to bypass it at all, you need to run a large ga bypass under the hood "before" it gets to the ammeter
The way to tell if your ammeter is correct is to simply turn on the headlights with the engine off. It should go to the left. If not, reverse the two wires on the rear.

Why - not that much differnt than any other one. They all have circuits, fuses, relays, switches, etc.

I just found that my 1969 Dodge Charger engine harness which I ordered from Year One is actualley a 1970 engine harness which changes several things including the voltage reg. I just compared wiring diagrams of the 69 & 70 chargers and noticed that it appears that the red and black Alt gauge wires on a 70 model are oppisite of the 69. For instance if your looking at the gauge face on the 69 the red wire goes to the positve side and black goes to the Neg. side. From what I can tell on a 70 the red is going to the neg. and the black to the pos. Does anyone know this for sure. On my cluster the Pos. post has RED stamped into the metal beside it.

I am just finishing rewiring my 65 dart from head to toe & I got(& still am a bit) confused looking at the factory wiring diagrams(ie the bulkhead) whether it was showing the back or the front side. Luckily I am driving an identical 65 dart GT so I can go eyeball things but it was still a moderately major ordeal. Do double check as in fact you may be good as is.

No idea. I didn't even use to worry about it. I'd just "clip lead" the ammeter terminals when reinstalling the cluster, try the lights, and if wrong, I'd reverse 'em. No big deal
