Have a 68 Dart that I planned to swap the 318 to a 340. I would like to use my original 904 trans instead of the 69 727 I have. What motor to trans brackets should I use?
The one's on the 318/904 or will I need to used the brackets off the 340/727?

I'm running a 904 behind a 402 in a 66 Dart. Trans was rebuilt, fully manual shift, 5 disk in front pack, and bolt-in sprag. Have about 50 1/4's on it and about 800 miles street use....

The poster wants to know about the engine to trans brackets.

I have built and ran them behind every thing from 273 to 402 strokers and have not had but one go bad and it was because the goober (me)kept driving even though he blew a cooler line, he (me) kept running it till it wouldn't move and filled it again and repeated the process several times till he got to the track (fixed leak there)raced all night drove home with trans slipping, next day forward gears were all gone, burn't up the forward clutch. Other than that they hold up great behind most street small blocks when built properly.

Use a 5 clutch front drum 4 rear clutches low 1st 2nd gears eliminate wavy snaprings TF1 or TF2 shift kit and you will be good to go for a long time unless you are running big inch motors with W something heads, then you gotta spend some $$$ on them.

Ditch the engine to trans brackets, if you insist on running them get some from a 360 car with a 904

Dave what's the downside to running them (if they're not interfering w anything such as headers)

No Brackets are being run..... However there is a torque strap on the motor.....

The low 1st gear is a great combination for the short stroke 318/340.

Do not run an old stocker 904 behind a 340. It'll be toast in no time.

Very likely more 360's produced with 999's than 727's OEM.

I use a low gearset 904 behind a 480hp 360 in my Spirit. I use good clutches, band, and a Turbo action Cheetah V/Body and have no breakage issues. A good V/Body is a MUST to put power through a 904. As to the brackets, I like to use them if they fit; the 318/904 should work, I think the 340/727 ones will too.

read the first post guys!!!

Lots of people run either trans without the struts, infact it is hard (impossible) to run headers with them in place.

The 318 and 340 use the same two struts with either the 904 or 727.

There was a change on some 360 blocks that will let you run the same 318/340 strut on one side (passenger?) but a longer 360 strut is needed on the other side (may have the sides mixed up).

Don't loose any sleep if you can't find them or fit them in. A torque strap of some kind is not a bad idea either, for more reasons than just no struts.

I used the 904 that came behind my 318 in the Dart, used a 360 out of a 85 van, but choice not to run the struts. As far as I know its still going strong with out them, this swap must be minimum 5 years old I sure better then that fall of 2002 IIRC.

If you run a deep pan and after market valve body, it should live a long happy life. A stock pan runs out of oil with higher rpm shifts, and 2-3 shift will be toast pretty quick without it. The after market VB will increase line pressure dramatically to help it lock in. I have run them for years behind 340's and have now switched to an A500 with good results plus OD....

Read the first post, guys? The subject TITLE asks if people are using a 904 with a 340/360, then his POST doesn't really match the title because it goes into the braces, not the 904/340/360 title. Some people answered the title, some the post, some both. This post seemed a lot more helpful than most to me.

Run the 904 till it dies and then go 727. THe mounts are the same between the both of them.
