Hi,

I'd like to tow my '70 Challenger to my workplace in order to replace the tyres.

Only,I can't find where I'm supposed to attach the towing cable, it isn't even mentioned in the service manual.
I'm a bit afraid of connecting the cable to a part of my car by good luck, since it could break or get damaged during towing.

Anyone who knows where the hook of the cable should be attached?

Assuming you mean the winch cable on the tow truck... If the car is nice, I would just use a winch strap wrapped around the K frame, and hook the cable onto that. Won't scratch anything that way.

For average cars, just wrap the winch cable itself around the K frame, and snap the hook back onto the cable and run it up.

Sound like a lot of work just to replace the tires.

Can you just air them up and drive the car slowly?

Or just jack the car up where it's at and take the wheels off. Put the wheels in your truck. Go get new tires on them. Bring them back and put them on the car. No towing required.

If you really need to tow it, the K frame is a good solid place to tie to the car, but you might want to remove the front valence so that your cable doesn't dent it.

Put the cable in the trunk of the Challenger and phone a tow truck company. To flat tow a Challenger I hope you are sure footed and can trust the other person either riding in your car or in the tow vehicle. Why chance have an accident for 100 dollars worth of towing.

If you are talking about using a tow truck, they would have a strap that would be able to attech to the K frame to pull it onto a tilt and load. If you use the sling on the Tow truck they would have everything you need, including insurance.

I think you should just ship it back here to the USA for us to try and find a good place to hok the cable!

I wouldn't tow it. I'd just take the tires....oops, tyres off of it and take them to work and change them. Take them one at a time if you have to.

@cataclysm80, the problem is, in Belgium you can only get an insurance for a car if the car is roadworthy. Thus, I first have to replace the old tires. Belgian law states as well that a car without an insurance cannot be driven on a public road, unless it's been towed.
So your idea is very good, but incomplete: what I'm going to do is just drive my car to the garage, and to avoid problems, attach it with the cable to my friend's car, so it will look like towing, while it's just me and my friend's car driving very close to each other at 20 MPH :-)
@ others: I know it'd be much easier to just take off the wheels, but I screwed up a little ventilation plug near the brakes, and I'd like the brake system to be checked by licensed mechanics.
THANKS for the quick responses!

This is going to be a disaster if you are going to drive it behind another car, attached by a cable, to make it "look" like you are towing it. Many here on this site have done this, but are you willing to lose the front of that Challenger because you think this is the easiest way to get the car there? Take the wheels and tires off, have someone who knows cars take a look at the "ventilation" plug. (bleeder, I assume)

Bull1TT your are right. This is a disaster just waiting to be towed. Use a Tow Vehicle-Car Trailer, Sling type tow Truck, tilt and load. Do not tow this Challenger even if you are faking it being towed.

I can not see why you can not jack the car up and put it on axle stands and take the tires and rims to the garage to be changed. If you do not trust your braking system then why are you even thinking of using the car via towing or driving. If you tow it and the brakes fail then your car will never be the same again. Good Luck.

My theory. " DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME " if you smash it up into another car then you will need a Tow Truck to finish the job anyways, and tires will be the least of your worries.

You guys are completely right. I followed your advices, took off the 4 wheels and brought them to the garage. All 4 tires are replaced succesfully now, and I installed 2 brand new bleeders on the front wheels.

Thanks a lot!

you did not mention if it is an auto or manual trans. If you tow an auto trans without removing the driveshaft you will fry the trans.

He mentions both people would be in the cars. Plus both cars run so the both engines would be running.

Boy, big brother must be everywhere overseas. I'd just drive to the shop insured or not.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.
