That front flat square tab on the front of the 440 block. Why all the odd letters and numbers going in all different directions?
Picture is of paper copy cause hard to see on block.
Snap your neck, mega G-force launch, is all I want!

everybody on the (fast moving) eng assembly line had to quickly verify that something in particular about that block was OK or measure something & stamp it saying that they checked it & it was OK so function was more important than aesthetics and at the end of the line the inspector could see & know that no areas had been overlooked IE a maltese cross or no maltese cross(dont know if that was for the block or the crank but you understand what I am saying)
live every 24 hour block of time like it's your last day on earth

with the 79 dodge service manual as a reference, the `a` marking on the top pad, in front of the engine, means that the cylinder bores were oversized .020 from the factory. also, from what i remember, the `t` mark means this is a truck engine, although i am not sure about that one.
fully legal sounds the same as full illegal...

That pad looks like what one would find on a service replacement shortblock , what makes you think it's a 68 MODEL year engine ?
It said 68 on the side of the block. I can't remember the month.
It also had the strengthing ribs.
if it said 68 on the side of the block that would be the date the block was CAST and should NOT be used to DETERMINE the ACTUAL year of the block as normal practice is the use the MODEL YEAR of the car the block was installed in to determine the year of the block , that pic is of a 400 .
Lastly I'm not sure when the rib started , I have a 67 cast 68 model year 440 that does not have the ribs and a may 69 cast 69 440 that does ....
