What is the difference between a internal and a external harmonic balancer? I need to order one for my car. The motor is a 1973 340 with a mild rebuild. Also recomendation for brand name and place to order.

External Balance will have an offset weight to compensate for (balance) the rotating assembly... If the engine has a forged crank typically there is enough weight in the counter weights to internally balance the engine.. On a cast crank the material is less dense so it doesn't weigh enough to compensate for the pistons & rods... The cgoices become lighter pistons & rods ($$$$) Mallory (very heavy) metal slugs in the crank ($$$) or a damper and flywheel/flexplate with offset weights... A 73 should have a cast crank... BTW this picture shows a externally balanced 440 damper... (Thanks Brandon!)
that is not 440 one is a 1972 Shown above is damper #3614374, used on 400's with external balance cast cranks one this a 70-71 440 hp Even though these dampers have an elliptical weight, they were never used with any cast cranks. These dampers were used with steel cranks and "six pack" (2951908 casting #) rods.one
He NEVER said that was a 6 pk balancer , it was used as a REFERENCE photo ...

i did he say is a 440 one
Your right I did... Shoot me.. I've edited the post to show a 440 damper.. What it's off has no bearing on the fact I used the photo to show what a balancer with an offset balance weight looks like... I take the time to explain throughtly in an in-depth technical way the answer to a question & rather than add something useful you feel the need to be a pinhead...

So after all this, back to my original question I have a 1973 340 and I need a harmonic balancer. Is my motor internally or externally balanced?

Was the engine rebuilt or is it still factory original ? Does it have a cast or a forged crank ? Can't give you a definitive answer without some basic, not so vague, info .
