I'll be towing my Coronet on an open trailer from Florida to the Nats in Ohio on wednesday. Does anyone know if any states will require me to stop at weigh stations on the way up? I'll be going through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio.

Yeah, it's got a hemi........a REAL hemi.

If you're not commercially licensed, I wouldn't bother. Pretty much only class 8 trucks(semis) run scales, straight trucks and buses usually bypass them. If it makes you happy, go through one, park out back in the wait lanes and ask the operator/trooper what they expect. S/F....Ken M

If the tow vehicle has no commercial lettering or licence plates you can slide by.These days any vehicle or combination over 10,000 lbs commercial or not is required to have a DOT number. You can go to DOT.GOV and do your research.

You're playing a very expensive game and may be unpleasantly surprised at the level of harrassment and the $ amount of the fines.

Well first you might want to read carefully the " warning for race rigs" thread in archives,
https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=0#Post4611784
but then maybe you don't. You also have to decide how legal youy want to be vs any legal risk. What others have done in past maybe just lucky but not legal. That will unfortutuately, eventually change. The main threshold you need to mainly be concerned with as just mentioned is, are you doing ANYthing to classify you as "commercial", that opens the floodgates. Unfortutately that definition has many different angles depending on who you ask, your opinion/logic counts very little to any DOT official. Running under the radar and bypassing the scales is likely today the best course of action, but not for long, and since nearly every vehicle/driver can be found in non compliance.

Since this thread is about "laws", anytime laws are discussed someone gets bent, says its political becuase they disagree, and then its locked? Oh crystal ball whats it going to be?

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

When I was traveling through North Carolina I pulled my rig over to the side of the interstate just passed an on ramp to take a leak...haha. When I came out of the trailer a NC/DOT officer had pulled over in the grass beside me eating his lunch

I almost crapped myself

Al is right! Ask Bob George about the DOT and race car trailers.
You have been lucky so far. I know West Virgina is bad and Ohio can be bad also. I think it's a $2,500.00 fine for bypassing the scales in Ohio.
You might want to check the Federal DOT laws, then write you congressmen and tell them what BS this is. Instead of screwing up health care why don't they fix the DOT laws.

We have been through this at work over the last few years. Every state has different laws when it comes to plates, etc. but pretty much anything with a GROSS COMBINED VEHICLE WEIGHT aka truck and trailer (i.e. any newer truck pulling a car on a any trailer) must have a log book, DOT #, record of inspection, etc, etc, etc. Does this apply if you are a recreational vehicle? Depends on the state. For instance I do not need any tags, etc. here in Oregon but if I tow to CA there better be a tag on the trailer or I risk getting messed with by the law.

That is simply the tip of the iceberg. I'm going to name my "street car" '66 Charger NOT FOR HIRE if I ever get it out of storage again. Don;t ask why it's in storage!

This is a state by state issue; however, the laws are not the problem it the folks enforcing them that don't know. North Carolina has in recent months made some real changes to the laws to make it easier on race teams coming into and racing in our state, Home of NASCAR, Z-Max and some major drag racing teams. I would check the web site; however, unless you are driving a tractor trailer with a pretty large trailer you should have not have to stop at weigh stations and should have no problem. If that was the case, the stations on I-85 would be backed up for miles every week-end. If you don't want to contact the state offices, contact Steve Earwood, owner of Rockingham Dragway, he is one of the committee members for the racing legislation.
