being conservative 36 total(wo vac adv) would be an excellent plan. What is your idle speed as you might be into the (mechanical) curve at that point & thats why the idle/timing isn't consistent & if so would need to lower the idle(best if can be done) or start the curve later. Not sure when it would be best all in by but you want to get the initial right for your eng/cam then the slot length welded for for 36-38 total(vac disconnected) then get the springs selected for as much as soon as possible wo pinging at WOT w vac still disconnected then hookup the vac adv & dial in as much as it will take wo pinging at part throttle. these need to be done one at a time in order. I just lightened my springs today & what a difference & no pinging so I'll go back in tomorrow & go lighter yet.

The curve is a bit of a tight rope walk with street driven pump gas cars. What works well on a cool day with good fuel may be disasterous on a hot day and bad fuel (sometimes mistakes happen when the tanks are filled on the trucks or when the trucks dump the fuel into the tanks at your local gas station).
It's a bit of a trade off. Ideally a fast curve gives the most response, but because of the above, the safer approach would be to have the curve start a little past idle and be fully in by 3000-3500 rpm. That's my

So Rapid Robert do you mean to speed it up it should be in by say 2500
Correct
2500 is ideal, however depending on your compression ratio, cam timing, fuel octane, air temp, etc. you may need to slow it down. But as rapidrob suggest you will need to play around, but I would start conservatively and work your way down.
