The linkage basically transmits the throttles position, (which is why it's important to adjust it properly) so that proper fluid pressure, band selection, and engagement is performed,.........the so called passing gear, some refere to, is just the transmission shifting to a lower gear (usualy 2nd) at full engagement, or detent of the kickdown arm, and usually at or near WOT,.....your obviously smarter/ more knowledgeable than your brother,.....keep an eye on him, set him straight! I can show him some fried/warped clutches and steels if he thinks it doesn't matter.... If he wants to be hardcore he can step up to a full manual valvebody and that will eliminate the kickdown linkage.
