My brother is putting his car back together and doesn't see a need for one. I know you need one, but I don't know why. Can anyone explain to him why one is needed?

it is a throttle pressure control valve linkage

it tell the trans what the engine is doing, and makes it kickdown for passing gear

it will burn the tranz up with out it,due to low line pressure and slippage

only way to loose the linkage is to use a forward or reverse shift pattern manual valve body

it will make it manual shift,as in..what ever gear you put it in it in that gear and stays there untill you shift it up or down

no auto shift with it

also should have a low band apply for the street

The linkage basically transmits the throttles position, (which is why it's important to adjust it properly) so that proper fluid pressure, band selection, and engagement is performed,.........the so called passing gear, some refere to, is just the transmission shifting to a lower gear (usualy 2nd) at full engagement, or detent of the kickdown arm, and usually at or near WOT,.....your obviously smarter/ more knowledgeable than your brother,.....keep an eye on him, set him straight!

LMAO @ Dayclona - you don't know that half of it. He is always trying to take shortcuts just to get stuff running and driving and he always says I'll do that later and I tell him just order the part/clean it and paint it now/whatever and wait another week. He's had problems with the trans linkage on his 69 Coronet R/T convertible for a year now and it still doesn't go into first - I think he remembers it every time he drives it then says Oh yeah I was gonna do that...
But he does have two cars that run while mine sit in the garage while I "do things right" OK maybe "half right". Maybe I'll run up to his house this weekend and help him out to get it going again.

you don't unless you want your trans to fry...or you can get a manual valve body.

I can show him some fried/warped clutches and steels if he thinks it doesn't matter....

If he wants to be hardcore he can step up to a full manual valvebody and that will eliminate the kickdown linkage.

Ok guys, I am the DA brother in this post, and I do have kickdown linkage on two out of the three cars I have, but I just never quite understood why I needed one, and my smart brother told me that I needed one on the Road Runner and I asked him why if I shifted manually and never kicked it down to passing gear,he answered "I do not know why, but you need one" Thus the post started to get the answer, which I appreciate! I will put it on.

Another gotcha for the "it doesn't matter what it's called" crowd.
