This is a stupid question but I just bought a 73 dart and need to replace the timing chain but can't get the harmonic balancer bolt to budge without turning over the motor. What am I doing wrong?

You need a friend to hold the motor while you loosen the bolt.

Got Mopar???

Or maybe I should have the friend hold the wrench while I turn the motor? LOL!

If the radiator is out, you may be able to get an impact wrench in there to loosen the bolt.

Okay, so get a friend to hold a wrench on a torque convertor bolt while you use a breaker bar and a 1 1/4" socket to loosen the bolt. Or you can wedge a wrench against a header and do it by yourself.

Put a ratchet on the bolt and hit it with a hammer in the direction to loosen the bolt. I found the shock of being hit my the hammer did more than force with a breaker bar.

Another idea is to use a breaker bar setup and wedge it against the frame and tap the starter and it should break the bolt loose when it turns over. I did this years ago on my 70 Barracuda with a 318 it worked pretty well.

Just buy the tool to hold the damper.
