I'm looking at buying a '68 Coronet 500. body and interior are nice but the motor has a few leaks, seams to be leaking from the front of the oil pan and there is a drip at the back of the motor from the bottom of the bell housing. The car has the origoinal 318 in it with a 904 trans. how hard is it to replace rear main seal or can a rope gasket be installed by unbolting the trans and moving it back?? Any ideas of what ity might cost to have the leak fixed? detroit area.

Thanks

trans will stay put but the eng will have to be raised enough to get the pan off. No idea on the price but it will take some hours(& you know how bad prices are). The fluid at the rear is (eng) oil not tranny fluid? the pan would need to come off anyway for the front oil leak but if the trans(front pump seal) is also leaking then yes the trans would need to be pulled back enough to take out the TC & get at the FP seal.

Should be tomorrow afternoon...I cleared a spot in the garage today. The oil leak turned out to be the oil pressure sending unit. it had a split and the wires in the top of it ...were'nt! so it leaked preety bad. drove it again today and put it on the highway for a good run when I came back the only drip was a bit of coolant, hoping just the overflow tube but it wasn't enough to get to concerned with. Might be time to think about a new screen name!
