I sprung an oil leak out the back of the intake manifold where we had RTV... The oil would come out at high rpm and while under load..

Today we made the repairs, however one question came up that I didnt know the answer to...

We lost the rubber grommet that holds the PCV in the valve covers and we ran one day at the track without any source of vacuum.. Can the pressure build up inside the block enough to blow out the RTV or do you think it was just a bad RTV job on the original install?

(BTW, the intake was installed about 2 years ago and the leak just happened the last time at the track)

Yes you need to remove blow bye and at WOT there is enough to pressurize the engine. should have a PVC and a breather on the other valve cover.

I use two PVC valves and two breathers, one of each in both valve covers. My stroke(4.300) is a little longer than yours so you may not need both PVC valves, I used a T off of the PVC port on the carb so there is one hose to each PVC valve The motor idles better now also

Only problem with PVC is there is no vacuum at WOT. You need a breather...If the blowing oil every were still, like out the dip sick tube, and just cant keep it sealed..It would be a ring problem no doubt.

There is a breather on one of the valve covers and PCV on the other.. When the PCV fell off, it basically had breathers on both sides and no vacuum source..

I guess the answer I was looking for is what could cause the RTV to blow out the back of the intake..??

Well pressure in the crankcase can certainly cause RTV to get blown out from under the intake. Or it could simply be that the RTV did not properly adhere the first time it was put on.

We run 2 Bbs and a SB with just breathers.None have problems. They are street driven and raced. My kid 62 still has the OE motor and gets driven more than most cars here.I run 12.5 domes and it sees 7K all the time.No leaks and no problems. The SB is built also.Rocky
