My son and I took my pile of scrap to the track for T-n-T yesterday. I wanted to try and get the home made caltracks and ranchos dialed in along with dialing in the carbs. First pass I set the shocks on 7 and ran 12.5 lbs. in the slicks. It spun a little coming off the line but went straight, carbs were real lean. Went back to the pits set the shocks on 9, went down to 12 lbs. on the tires. Went down .010 on the air bleeds on the secondaries and closed the air doors down about .250. Truck still spun a bit off the line but left straight with very little weight transfer. It was still a bit lean. Back to the pits, went up 4 more jet sizes on the rear, up 2 in the front, went back up on the air bleeds, opened the air doors up again. Went with 13lbs. in the slicks as at 12 the ride was REAL unstable down track at speed.
Motor was still real lean and poped and missed on this pass. Back at the pits I put the small bleeds back in and closed the air doors down again. 13 lbs. in the slicks, back at the line I brought the motor up against the converter, at the last amber I nailed it. It went instantly into wheel hop, it bounced the rear tires off the ground 3 times before I could get off the throttle. I think the front tires even bounced off the ground. I now know what a paint can feels like in a paint shaker.
The end result of all this was the motor moved forward and the fan and brand new aluminum radiator are history. I first thought I'd broken a motor mount or something. After looking everything over thought everything appears to be intact and where it belongs. I guess I'll be making up a couple fore and aft engine limiters.
From viewing my sons video what I came away with was, I need more tire under the rear and possibly some new leaf springs. The shocks were almost all topped out on launch. So, I'm done for the year now, frustrated, but know which direction I need to go. Dave
