I messed up. I should have waited to have my headers coated until after I broke the engine in, now I'm hoping I don't burn it off by being too lean/rich. It's a hydraulic cam, so it'll have to go about 20 minutes at 2,000 RPM. Should I find someone with a break-in stand and borrow an old set of headers instead?

Wouldn't be a bad idea to borrow some headers if you can.

Any time you run an engine with the hood open and at fast idle the headers can actually get so hot the can start glowing red. A lot of the problem is with the hood open all the air goes up and out instead of around the headers and out the back. I have broken in engines three times in my challenger with coated headers and used as many fans as i could find and they still look pretty good. This is after i cooked a set years ago.

Or just throw an old set of manifolds on it...prolly even turn big block ones upside down to make it simpler.

I just started my 408 last Saturday with new coated Headmans. Nitroplate in Nashville did the plating. I asked specifically about breaking in a new engine with them and was told as long as it wasn't lean they would be ok. They have about 1 1/2 run time on them with no change in appearence.

Was the carb run before, it should be close... most
of the time its the timing isnt right during break
in... get the timing right first thing

Here's a trick to get the timing correct before you fire it. Take all the plugs out, put them in the wires and lay them on the headers. Then you can crank it over with a timing light and check it before you attempt to fire it.

Jim all I do is set the crank at X degrees before then
set the leading edge of the rotor to the cap terminal
But most guys dont realize that at 2000 rpm and no
load it should be more advance than the load type
timing

With a crank trigger I can't change it once the car is running. Because of that I get it set with a light before I attempt to start it.
