I painted white lines on mine at 30, 35 and 40. They all seem to do that. Mine is an ATI.

well here is part of the problem.i have 30 line on the damper.i had timing set at 30* locked.is each line 2*?i found TDC [close] with a screwdrive in the plug hole.it looks like 10 lines retarded and 20 advanced. sounds confusing huh?

Buy or borrow one of the screw in positive piston stops(Summit, Jegs, Aircraft Spruce, Chiefs Aircraft Supplys), remove #1 spark plug and install the stop all the way in(make sure the piston is NOT at TDC before you start. Once it is in rotate the motor over by hand very slowly, (it works best if all of the other plugs are out)until the piston hits the stop, mark the dampener, reverse the rotation until the piston hits the stop the other way and mark the dampener, TDC is halfway between the marks

Mike that balancer looks chewed up. I hope it didn't effect the balance of it or get it super hot inside from the friction of the bolt that was hitting it. I love the ATI super damper as they are very easy to read when setting the timing, but they're expensive. My Dart has the TCI Rattler which is also very easy to read.
