the pockets are shallow unfortunatly,i was thinking of maybe just a cam change and maybe some head work.
You want to rebuild the bottom end or leave it as-is? Or maybe just throw in a new set of piston rings for now?

could i use the stock 4bbl with a mild stroker kit.
You could, but the DP4B can pass for stock to 99% of people and flows so much better than stock. Go to ebay and type in DP4B, there's a couple overpriced ones on there. I wouldn't pay more than $100tops. Carefully grind off the edelbrock logo and that looks like a stock intake.

eddie strip kit for the AFB and light springs for the dist(& a pertronix if the bushing shaft play is still good & if not rebuilt ones are cheap). 68-70 B body HP ex manifolds(or max wedge repros)

on a budget, you at least need quality machine work or you'll have sloppy tolerances, low oil pressure, and lots of blow by on the rings. spend $700 or so and have the block bored, honed, and check the crank/rods, hopefully all they need is a polish job. then, put some flat top pistons, or maybe even raised dome pistons if you have open chamber heads, to get the compression up where you need it to be for good power, off the shelf sets are what...$400? then a quality cam so the way I see it, you could do it for about: Rings/bearings: $200 Pistons: $400 machine work $700-900 Cam, lifters, springs, new timing chain/gears:$500 for $1800-$2000 you could have a stock appearing 383 that pushes 450 hp, and probably keep the stock appearing intake and stock exhaust logs!

i'm doing just basic rebuild on my 440 (heads, headers, electronic distributor and carb already purchased, not included in this figure)
$370 for machine work (discounted...friend of a friend)
$40 to press pins in new piston/rod assy.
$500 for engine kit - rings, bearings, pistons, etc. (again discounted)
$400 for cam and lifters, timing cover, timing set, triple gauges, spark plugs, etc.
$90 for deep sump pan and pickup
$40 in hoses
right at 1400 right now...not much left to get - shouldn't cost much more to go a little bit higher performance

I would give up the idea of the stock intake. Changing it is probably the cheapest and easiest way to gain power some after buying an inexpensive cam kit from summit

thanks for the suggestions, great advice, any ideas on a cam?
Depends on a lot of things. Vehicle weight, rear diff gearing, rear tire diameter, torq converter(stock or aftermarket?), and most importantly your intended usage of the vehicle. If you want to keep it really mild/stockish I want to suggest a Lunati 60302.

Comp XE268 would be a good grind, and not too radical.
2016 Ram 1500 Crew Cab: 5.7, 65RFE, 4.56 gears with locker, Hemifever tuned, AFE intake, 87mm throttle body, JBA headers, 3" Flowmaster exhaust, split to dual 2.5" exits. 13.57 best ET so far.
Searching for new A or B Body Project!

How deep are your pockets and how much power do you want? If you've got 2k to drop on heads, you can get a set of CNC ported 440source stealth heads(they look very close to stock externally) but flow enough to make 600hp. Or a regular $900 set of stealth heads that'll flow enough to make 500hp with. Then you could toss in a stroker kit to punch that 383 to a 496, again not visible from the outside. Add on an edelbrock DP4B intake which flows better than stock intake but looks so similar to a stock intake very very few people would know. Some even came with a chrysler part # cast onto them to make them look very stock. Then toss on a decent holley vacuum secondary carb, again hidden by the air cleaner, run your stock air cleaner with a 383 pie tin on it and your aluminum headed 496 fire breathing stroker will look like a stock 383, maybe with a set of headers. That's just thinking out loud if you want to spend some money and run deep 11's in the 1/4 mile....
DaytonaTurbo: I like the way you think and have been saving my $$ to build a 496 383. I cant wait to kick some a$$ with "a little ole 383"
