hi,first i think this site is great,no better way to get answers then by people that have been there,anyway,im restoring my r-r 1969,the little box thats at the end of the column just before it slides into the steering box,the top on this thing keeps falling off,is there any way to just eliminate this damper,maybe weld it solid,do i need it,any pics,thanks-jeff

You need to rebuild it.

It gives some movement that is needed.

Not sure about welding it..never seen that before but that does not mean it can't be done...others will chime in but I think that it needs to be there to handle the slight off-center angle between the column and gear box....steering coupler rebuild kit is available through mopar...you say the top of the coupler is sliding off and I assume you mean the metal clip that holds the rubber gasket on. This is a common problem and has been addressed on this forum many times before...there used to be a member that sold a tool that would clamp this thing in place (like the factory) but not sure if its still available. Also a member that sold a wire clip that held it down. What I did was to very carefully pre-bend the eight end tabs in a vice with the clip in-palce on the coupler so that it would snap into place when installed..worked for me.
