I bought an aluminum hood emblem for my dakota, aftermarket billet CNC'd with the dodge "triad" symbol on it.

it came black with the triangle being silver, and I believe the coating to be some sort of opaque annodizing. it's super hard, doesn't feel like paint or powder coat either.

what would be a good stripper to remove this back down to bare aluminum? I've heard oven cleaners? what kind and where do I get it? in my 6 years of home ownership, and the whole time growing up, we had self cleaning ovens that simply burned away the spilled food, and you just wipe up the dust when it's done, so I've never bought oven cleaner!

I want to polish this up shiny silver and paint the triad red

Thanks!

Cheap oven cleaner with Lye in it has worked for me.

Easy Off in the yellow can. Drop it in a Ziploc(tm) bag, coat the piece heavily, close the bag (squeezing out as much air as possible), and let it do its thing.

WOW! that stuff works!

it started to pitt the aluminum before it had removed all of the coating! now I gotta sand with 80 grit to get the pitts out, and then, of course step my way up to 1500 or so before I can buff this out.

...I wonder if I would have been better off to just start sanding it with 180 grit?

The stuff here in CA doesn't seem to be that strong...the epa or what ever probably dilutes ours down

I followed the directions above about using a ziploc and pushing the air out...the stuff was so foamy at first, I couldn't get ANY air out. I eventually got some out, let it set, came back maybe 2 hours later and the bag was like a baloon, ready to blow up! surprised me, and made me glad I came back, because, like a fool, I just left it on the kitchen counter--imagine the mess THAT would have made, if I didn't come back in time and it did explode all over the counter!

Maybe I used too much? it was totally submerged in the cleaner--taking a bath!

I would have liked to have read the thread about that (with pictures of course)

Can you do it again and leave the room for a longer time?

sure, let me run that one by my wife!

I've been fortunate enough to NOT break any glass tables, but then again, the "gotta do it again, this time the RIGHT way" bug always seems to get me, so she sees Lots and lots of dollars going out of the checkbook and isn't happy about that.

....hmmm...she just said "If you do that, Then I get my new kitchen now!!"

Wow, hadn't seen that pic in a while. Nice to see it every couple of years.

That's why I don't post my F-up's here!

When you warned that could happen.

But it didn't help that he put it in bag and let it sit a couple of hours. I think that's pretty heavy handed.

I've done the easy off deal but just let it sit in open air for about 30 mins or less. It probably will take more applications but you have more control.

I just did an E-body woodgrain faceplate dash piece last night and I was so paranoid about pitting I stood with the piece in my hand and sanded it a little with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. It probably took about an hour total and a few applications to get the raised areas and the inside of the gauge lips all done so I can polish them. I wasn't worried about the inside areas because I am putting a new decal in there. I wanted to be safe rather than sorry when using it and kept a close eye on it as per other's recommendations.

I missed your warning, must have been in another thread that I couldn't find using our awesome search engine, and the guy above suggested to do it that way.

lesson learned! 30 minutes with some 80 grit and the pits are gone, and I'm up to 320 grit now, and it starting to shine up nicely!

once I'm done sanding, and find a buffing wheel and get it shined up, I'll post some pics!

if I feel up to it, I'll go get some quality buffing compound and really get it shiny, it's got just a few swirl marks in it yet, if you look at it inside...out in the sun, and it's blidning! all I used for buffing was the only buffing compound I have, which came with a plastic headlight lens restoration kit, so it's definitly not top quality buffing compound!

A little after-the-fact warning.....the bag you had the part in (w/ the oven cleaner) was being inflated with hydrogen gas. (a miniature hindenburg)
If you have to do this again, make sure to keep it away from any sources of ignition or the neighbors may be shouting 'Oh, The humanity!!!'

hmm...interesting! I must have not read the label entirely. And this stuff is marketed to be used in OVENS!?! or is it just the aluminum that creates the release of H2?
