A 2009 Dodge 3500 cumming truck? The wife and I are considering buying a 2010 Ram 3500 Dually, since I dont think they are out there yet just curious what everyone thinks of the 09's? The engine and trans are same in 2010 but the styling will be changed to look more like the 09 1500's. At any rate anyone out there have any experience with them?

My Dad has an 08 3500 quad cab. I got to tow with it in April when we took his car to a track about 2 hours away. The motor, auto trans, and exhaust brake all work flawlessly together. It had no problem getting 10000ish lbs of car and trailer up to speed. I ran it WOT anytime we merged on the highway and ran 80mph most of the trip and pulled off 10mpg. It only had 1000 miles on it when we got back from the trip so I don't think its to bad. I figure after break in it will get 12 which is what my other two cummins trucks got with the same trailer. The 08 has a bigger cab and 125 more ponies though.

I think cummins already met the 2010 emisions with the current engine. I guess the next move for diesel emmisions will require them to shoot sunshine and rainbows out of the tailpipe.

I have an 08 that has the same motor as the 09-10. I've had tons of trouble with the electronic controls for the motor. It's at the shop as we speak for a crank position sensor. I've had the following sensor trouble that all have required a trip to the dealer.

Turbo boost not detected 3 times

exhaust temp sensor once

crank position sensor performance 2 times

Cam position once

throttle position once

broken injector once, 3 weeks without truck warranty paid but one injector costs $1,300

ECM failure of some kind that put it in limp mode for the ride home once. 30-40MPH on freeway.

They are having trouble now with emission related sensors, but none available 200 on national backorder. I guess I'll have that trouble next.

When the truck is running it pulls like nothing I've ever had, but I have more faith in the new prez than I do my truck if that tells ya anything.

Al, im a mopar guy till the end but i went with the duramax chevrolet.i did a back to back road test same day, the duramax blows it away.

Well I have been a Ford truck guy forever, only had one Dodge over the years and was pretty underwhelmed with it. You guys are not giving me a warm fuzzy this time either. I agree the Chevy's are nice pieces as we maintain a fleet with them in it,as well as the new Fords. I just cant stomach the Chevy price, initial and the resale end from what I have seen around here.

My curent 05 F350 is barely broken in but we are planning for the future now. We will be facing a BIG move in three years and I am at a crossroads on this deal. Maybe I can lay it out here and see what your opinions are. A little backround might help. We are facing a move in 2012, right now it looks like that move will either be to Italy or Germany. Obviously we will not be taking a 1 ton Dually to either place. So here are my options. I can keep what I have as there is nothing wrong with it. It is an 05 Powerstroke with only 60K on it, the bluebook is right at $25K now, only paid $32k for it. Willing to sell it for $22obo. Or I can keep it and sell in 2012 when we move, figure it will be worth maybe $10-12K then maybe. I can buy a new Dodge or maybe Ford now and kleep it til we return as it will be fairly new still as it is going to sit for the better part of three years. Or we can sell the one we have now in three years and go away and buy a truck upon our return. My fear of that is given what these things cost now I can only imagine what they will cost in 2015 Then again according to many phophecies we are all going to die in 2012 so maybe I should just not worry about it Dont even get me started on what to do with the race car and the other toys, anyone want to car sit for three years

Al, I have a late 07 Mega Cab with the 6.7 Blue Tech. I currently have 29000 miles on it and it just recently stopped having problems throwing codes for fuel issues, which is good because it was in the shop quite often. Milage is about 2.0 less than the 5.9, about 16.5 @ 70 unloaded. Power unloaded and towing my heap is great. The good thing about the new design is they worked some of the bugs out of the front end 4X4; on an un-even road, such as I80, the front end will actually get the death wobles. IMO Cummings is the best there is. All in all it has been a great truck and I would believe the 2010 to be that much better.

Dustin,Appreciate the advice, and it is a sound economic principle. Just not sure I care to spend what it will take to get a new truck in 2015. I am worried about that inflation thing, you know the huge white elephant sitting in the corner of the room no one wants to talk about. I have HUGE issues just thinking of buying anything from either Dodge or Government Motors actually. But that is a topic for another discussion.

We can buy a truck at a really good price now, I am hoping we wont have this oppourtunity again anytime soon as it is being purchased, if we do through the military sales becuase my wife is deployed in Iraq still. So the price is right, and the oppourtunity is there, To be honest I am not real into buying one myself but the wife is pushing the issue to buy now. Lord knows she loves her shopping, even from a warzone, dang internet

Al, You and I are in the same boat. I put away a little over $50K in order to buy a new 2010 Crew Cab, Cummins. After seeing what has transpired with these companies, I am not plopping down that kind of loot for an unsure thing in the way of quality and support, if the truck needs to go back to the dealer. Too many questions for me to justify the expense. Soooooooo, what was my second plan you ask??
As you know what type of business I am in, I get the inside scoop on just about everything with wheels. I may be going to South Carolina to pick up the truck in the pic that I have attached for $20K.
This puppy will tow the trailer and my house, if I wanted to take both of them to the track with me. Just an FYI, these can be had for a fraction of the cost of a 2010 Dodge. I must say that I really dig the new design of the Dodges, but, I still cannot justify the cost???

Inflation is a serious threat given the amount of money injection and the change in monetary policy to help combat the recession. Being that as it is, and with the economy still in a bit of a slump, there are deals to be had and if you can find a truck that you are happy with now, and will be happy with 5 years from now, its probably not a bad option.

If light duty trucks go the way of the big trucks, with the EPA virtually crippling them with regulations, used trucks prices will remain high and people will stop upgrading every couple years and just hang onto their old proven Iron. When we bought my dads new truck at the end of 04, the 05s were already out, but had the added EGR and cats, so we opted to purchase and early 04 model, still new, but without the smog equipment.

Its simply a guessing game at this point. I've got a Bachelors degree in Economics now, you can throw around all the theories you want and try to figure out what prices are going to be, but in the end they are just that, theories. Nothing is for certain especially during these times.

Buy the truck Al, and keep the wife happy.

The bad thing with the new Emmisions is I am not sure you can get away from the demons they have caused. I don't follow chevrolet at all so I don't know about them. But Ford and obviously cummins had had issues with the new smog stuff. One thing to remember though is like you said the cummins isn't changing a thing, so they have 3 years of trying to get this lined out. Ford and Chevy will be putting another filter on the exhaust side and I am sure there will be a learning curve for them.

I got a memo at work about updating the fleet now if we need to. My company ordered 6 new 09 trucks(petes 335s and KW T300s) just to have on hand if any of the operations wanted or needed new trucks. Said right from the start the 2010 cost was going to be about $5K more per truck. We currently have two 8.3L cummins powered 08 Pete 335s and they have been great.

Anything 6.7 out there built after Dec 08 has been pretty decent. ANY 6.7 truck that hasn't had the ECM updated since MARCH 09 needs to be. In my experience if the truck has been purchased to tow, and tow hard, they have been much more trouble free than those that get used like a "car".

The 68RFE trans.....six speed, manual shift feature right on the stalk. I've only talked with one guy that had a failure. Local company with 6 trucks. They tow 15-22k all the time. Broke a shaft in the trans and ruined it. Truck had 97K miles on it. The trans has been awesome...unless of course you like to make a living repairing them (glad Im not the tranny guy).

Supposedly fords new diesel for 2010 is going to make 750 ft lbs stock and is one he!! of a truck. My buddy works in the plant and gave me some info. Just a thought, you might look into them.

just imagine where diesel technology will be in another 5 years, bugs worked out? probably. Id wait, compare a 00 to an 05 look at the increase in power and comfort. The sales will be there.

I appreciate the input guys. We are currently getting a price work up on and F450 as well. The prices we are able to get on these trucks are very good, however not much of a benefit given the reason we are able to. We had priced a loaded 2010 Dodge diesel mega cab dually and can get it for just under $40K, have a feeling the Ford will be about $3-4K more.

Chris, I like those style trucks but as you know this is also my daily driver, well at least when I am not riding the Harley. Trying to manuever that thing around the city moght be fun though We actually have a few in the fleet we maintain and they are pretty much trouble free. I also used the Isuzu NPR engines in my fleet when I ran the Deere dealership. Basically the same engine in thier 1 ton trucks only with an iron cylinder head.

With your situation, I would not spend now to save later. An 09 will drop in value (old style) and the 10 is a new body (bugs to work out).
