Ok so my dart is a salvaged title, and was wondering if anyone has gone through all of this. If i heard correctly i need a CHP inspection, Brake and light test, and the dmm website says fee's depend on what is done. Has anyone ever registered a salvage vehicle in CA. What are some things to look for and roughly how much were all the fee's in the end? I know im asking alot but i thought it was worth a shot. Thanks, Chris.

I've done a few It's easy.... DMV will do your VIN verification, then you just need to go to a brake and light test station to have the test done. Once you pass they will give you a couple slips of paper showing that, and bring those to the DMV when you go to register it. Brake and light was about $60 ? $70 all together... VIN verify at the DMV is free..

I used to buy alot of salvage vehicles from insurance auctions to ship to Oz, and my daily drivers all came from there since they were deals, and was never a big deal registering them. My current truck (an '02) came from an auction when it was under 2 years old and I got a great deal on it...was just a theft recovery deal. Think my SS 'vert I have now is one of the few late models I have had that are clean title, out of the paper sort of cars Oh, and your DMV can probably give you a list (they do here at least) of local places to have the brake/light test done

Mine wasn't a salvage title but I was regisering the car in Calif for the first time....when I went to the DMV the lady behind the desk came out to the parking lot and verified the vin's,checked all the lights worked, and signed me off on the spot! My suggestion is to find a DMV office in a small town near you (if you don't already live in a small town). Make an appointment on line before you go. All my local DMV offices were several days out to over a week, the DMV in Woodland, about a 20 minute drive, got me in the next morning at 8:30 and I was on line at 3pm day before!

my 70 Charger wasn't registered since 1987 and I got it running in 1999. People at the DMV told me I had to get CHP to sign off on the vehicle before I could get a road worthiness paper (# 7 i think) for the windshield in order to drive it to the DMV. I went to the CHP in old Torrance off of Knox St. and Vermont and they told me that they would do it for a fee but I had to make an appointment and have the car trailered down. I loaded up the car on a AAA tow truck and took it down. They did their thing and told me they had to affix a number plate to the vehicle....in my lack of brain power I forgot to bring the Fender tag.....you have to have your fender tag on, they want to match numbers and run it if it might be stolen. I was done for like 60 bucks, went to the DMV the next day, got a placard, went home, grabbed the Charger and went back. Make sure everything is working. Horns, seatbelts, all windows are in, brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights, rear view mirror and that doors open and close normally and lock.

when i registered my salvage car(2000 Hyundai), they just checked the vins at different points on the body to make sure there weren't stolen parts on it (car was still in its wrecked condition) cost me abotu $100 to have that done...in IA, though.
my 78 dodge, they didn't even bother, just gave me a regular title in place of the salvage title when i went to get the plates

Once your vehicle is deemed salvage on the system here in CA...that's it basically.

When did all this stuff start?
I lived in California for over half my life and owned over a two dozen different cars while I lived there. They ranged from junkers to brand new right off the showroom floor. I never had to have one checked at a "certified brake and light shop".
Every time I hear a story about the police state California has turned it to, I am so glade I escaped when I did.
How many of them did you register from being Salvaged?
They have needed to be checked by brake and light shops if they were a salvaged vehicle for a while now that I know of. (for the first time registering them after deemed Salvage.)

None that I know of. But I drug cars out of the desert that had not been regestered in over 20 years and never had to take them to an "offical brake and light shop". We got them running and got things working that needed to work and when to the DMV, no need for an appointment. The lady at the DMV when to the parking lot and checked the car and that was that. You were issued a temporary title and the permanent title came in the mail about two weeks later. But life was simpler years ago when California was really the Golden State.
