I have a 67 440 and a 77 440, which is now seized, I want to put all the goodies from the 77 in the 67, including the Edelbrock cam, I was told by Edelbrock that I cannot use the cam in the 67 because 68 and later blocks have a 3 bolt sprocket and 67 and prior have a one bolt. Is there a way to convert the 67 to a 3 bolt? -BD

Will the last one leaving the US please turn out the lights.

The cam should be matched to the upper timing gear, that's it. At worst- change your timing set to match your cam, you should anyways IMO...

I'm not sure what they were trying to tell you at Edelbrock, but all you have to do is make sure that if you're using a 3 bolt camshaft, you're also using a 3 bolt cam sprocket, or if your cam is a 1 bolt design, you're using a 1 bolt cam sprocket. Year of the engine should have nothing to do with it.

Where you will have a major difference between the 67 and the 77 engines, is the crankshaft and vibration damper, as the 67 will (or should) have a forged steel crank and thin damper. The 77 will (or should) have a cast crank and a much thicker damper. The different in thickness between the two dampers could also affect your pulleys and possibly other brackets and accessories that are bolted onto the front of the engine.

the stock 67 lifters and push rods are different after 68.. They later ones work fine as long as you use both the newer lifters with the newer pushrods.... Do not mix an match with your stock 67 ( if its still original) lifters and pushrods...

The 77 has a matching Edelbrock double roller timing chain so I'm good there. Yes I'm aware that sometime in 74 all 440's became cast crank motors.

This is the only tidbit you need to keep in mind. I would also run the 77 rocker arms because I hear the mid 70's rocker arms are better than the 60's rockers. Someone said once the mid 70's big block rockers are the exact same ones MP now sells as their 'HD' rocker arms. But at the very least be sure to run the 77 pushrods with your lifters. Also be sure each lifter goes back in the same hole it cam out of. When you take them out keep them in order. If you mix them up you'll have to buy new lifters and break the cam in again.

Also that bit e-brock told you about later motors comming with 3-bolt cams is a load of bull. I recently pulled the stock cam out of my 76 440 and it was a single bolt. I had to buy a new t-chain kit when I went to install my aftermarket 3-bolt cam.

I think the only motors that came stock with 3 bolt cams were the 426 hemi, maybe the 440-6pk and the 413 industrial but I'm SURE if I am incorrect someone here will correct me...

The 413 industrial with gear drive has a 3-bolt cam.

Can those be used in other motors with the 3 bolt cams?

Ya, if you can find a reverse rotation cam to use with it!
