Well I am almost finished with the fabrication on the Cuda, and it is time to consider painting the floor pans. I spent last weekend stripping the suspension, and scraping the undercoating off of it. What a PIA! I dug the old homemade rotisserie out of the weeds and mounted it to make it easier to clean and paint the underside.

Should I go body color with them. Most of my friends cars are painted black / POR-15 underneath.

The car is going Red, and I considered Red, or Silver underneath.

This car is race only, and likely stay that way as long as I am alive.

What did you do with your car? What would you do differently?

-Dave

Thanks!

I painted my GTS underneath and it looks fantastic. Just wasn't sure if I should do it with the race car. Hitting the road in a couple of hours to head back to the farm to get some more work done on it.

Didn't want to cause trouble with the neighbors when I go crazy with the wire wheel and grinder hehehehe. Back home on the farm only the cows car hehehehe. Will check back in sometime over the weekend when I can get a web connection.

Thanks again!

-Dave

Having it on the rotisserie, you'd be a fool to not paint it. I would first shoot an epoxy primer. Assuming you're going to paint the undercarriage first, I would paint it the same body color, because of the overspray from when you paint the exterior.
You have a lot of block sanding and priming ahead of you. Take your time, and just enjoy the process.

With the way your black Duster turned out maybe you should give him a helping hand. That car is absolutely STUNNING! P.S. Are you going to check up on Fred from time to time to make sure he's keeping it beautiful?

When I did my 68 Cuda I applied 2 good coats of epoxy primer over the bare metal, then the painter applied a light coat of rock guard, then primer/sealer, then the base coat color and then a clear coat. The clear makes it a lot easier to clean and the rock guard helps minimize rock chips which you will have from the burnout box.

I would go with body color. I'd like to do that with my Demon at repaint time,I think it also makes cleaning the underside of the car easier.

There was a SS/AA Cuda, the "West Virginia Hemi" that was red and black. They detailed the underside by painting the floorpan red and the frame sections black.

For a race/custom car? Sure why not, looks great, easy to clean, etc. If you want to really step it up a notch weld up all of the open seams, grind any sharp edges, etc.before you paint it, will make it even easier to clean. One things for sure though, paint it body color, not some other color.

*BTW, I wouldn't put POR15 anywhere on any car! In fact I wouldn't even use that garbage on my lawnmower!

Spray on the POR-15 then spray on the POR-15 tie coat primer and then spray it your body colour!

On a racecar, I'd definitely prefer a glossy color to flat black; easier to see things (depending on darkness of the color), easier to keep clean. The downside for some guys is having to keep it clean.
There'll be rubber all over and to the rear of the rear wheelhouses, but you might consider spraying some gravel guard on the underside before painting it to help avoid rock (and tool) chips. I'd go with the body color. Masking the underside when you paint the rest of the exterior will prevent overspray.

Well I spent a good 12 hours on it yesterday, and I am beat. The heat out here is unbearable!

Managed to finish cleaning up the underside and getting it in epoxy primer. I found a few spots that I want to repair, and just wont have the time to get it in color this weekend.

It sure looks better with the primer on it now. I will probably go with body color. I will use single stage underneath, and base clear everywhere else. That should make any repairs easier.

Thanks for all the advice!

-Dave
