Hi!

I was wondering whats the difference between a small block R1 block and the newer R3 currently being sold?

Any shortcomings or issues on any of the 2?

If you were to build a stout w2 headed small block what would your choice be?

Thanks!

Domingo

Biggest difference would be the foundry......

R1 was done on production line tooling, R3's are done by Motor Castings Co in Milwaukee. "Generally" the R3's have much better core shift/sonic #'s because of this.

No R1's were avail in siamese bores... R3's avail in both siam & no siam

R1 will have liter valley that more closely resembles a factory valley, will have oil drainbacks & center will be open to cam tunnel, R3's fully filled in cam tunnel with no drains out of box. R1 will be around 20 lbs lighter than similar R3 due to difference in valley material.

Both will have 18 bolt head provisions & +.400" tall lifter bosses.

Bottom end/Deck thickness etc, pretty much same on both blocks.

Don't want to highjack this post but I have a couple of questions. Does the R1 require less grinding to use roller lifters than a R3 and is the R1 a better block than the X block? Again, intended use is a W2 head engine.

If anything I'd say an R1 would require maybe hair more clearancing work than an R3 for roller link bars/rivets.

R block.. they are drop in deal, as R block does not have inner row of head bolt bosses, lifter valley is like factory block/X block.

For all intensive purposes an R1 might as well be an X block other than the 18 bolt capability & I think they have slightly thicker deck, that's about it.
