On my 22k mile Survivor T/A, moisture must have collected underneath the trunk mat. From the pictures you can see how I have some rust/corrosion.

I want to stop this and protect the metal, but how would you seal and refinish to give a near factory look?

Also will post some detail of the trunk mat.

Thanks

My guess is that most people would say to leave it alone if it is truely a "survivor" It's only that way once.

Im not sure if anyone else sells it but Eastwood sells a clear rust encapsulator.

it isnt clear after if reacts with the rust. it dries to a greyish finish. The rust will not progress once its sealed. then you dont have to worry about it until you begin a resto or you decide to sell.

Id loved to hear what can be done to clean up the mat, I have the same issues with my original superbird mat.

I'd assume that as long as the car is being properly stored now that you should not have any additional issues with rust spreading further.

BTW, you now need to update your signature to reflect the fact that you now have a 22K mile survivor instead of a 21K survivor.

Anyone ever try the household produvt CLR on something like that mat? Think I would try a small area as it removes rust stains left from high iron levels found in well water here in FL

I have used CLR and a scrub brush - it gets a lot of the rust stain off of trunk mats. As for the trunk floor, leave the mat out whenever the car is parked for awhile and leave it as is. If I was looking to buy a survivor I would rather see what you have in the trunk than a primered-up, doctored up trunk and other areas.

You might consider using a product like Evaporust. It would sit down in the trunk grooves, or you could soak a rag in it and lay the rag over the surface. With a little time, that should get the rust gone. Then you could clear over it to keep it from rusting, or scuff and repaint inside the trunk.

Evaporust shouldn't harm your body plugs or seam sealer. It might help on the trunk mat too.

The Evaporust is a good idea but thats NOT surface rust. POR 15 has a clear paint but if it was my car , I would leave it alone and store it properly in a very dry area. You could try some heavy junk towels soaked in the Evaporust and lay the towels on the rust for a few days to see if it works.

Good old Naval Jelly. Brush it on and let it set, wash it off and all the rust will be gone but not the paint. Spray it with clear if you do not want to repaint.
