In the process of rebuilding a 71 dart and want to do a dash my own way. Looked at fast lane west inserts, but they don't appear to work in my 71. Thinking about ordering a new rallye from year one and then putting aftermarket gauges in it. has anyone done this or know if it can be done? And do I need to buy or make special bezels or anything else for that matter? Hope to do speedo and tach in large holes, fuel in small center hole and then oil psi, water, and volt under dash. Thanks, JP

71 Darts never had a rallye dash. If your car has the rectangular shaped speedo the round rallye style guages won't fit because the metal dash frame is different.

It can be done but take a ton of trimming. May be better of finding a new frame.

As for gauges. The Big 5" autometers fit in the big holes and the 2-5/8 fit in the center hole.

hi
Does a regular gauge cluster's metal backing bolt to the rallye bezel? I ask because I think it would be cool to have my autometer gauges in a rallye cluster, but I don't really want to purchase the back, as I already have a standard gauge backing.

Neil, wasn't aware it wasn't done in 71. Year one has them for 71 model year. Kind of confused, but not afraid to trim if that is required and will end up looking good. Thanks for all the info, time to go to year one directly and see what can be done. Thanks again, JP.

They probably show the rallye bezel as a 71 part because 1971 340 demons and plymouth dusters came with a rallye instrument cluster package.

Never tried it, but the metal "can" that holds the guages on a standard cluster is very different than a rallye setup.

Here is a link to a picture of a bare rallye dash frame (not mine) so you can see how much open space there is behind the guages. It shares little in common with the standard dash frame.
