Other than Robb's Performance, next best mini for header clearance. Hooker Headers #5903HKR 71 Cuda 383 auto.

I went with 440 source. Bolted in, fired right up, no hassles except I STILL had to drop the headers to install it. I thought the whole point of a mini-starter was not having to do that.

Nah, its just for clearance so you don't have to your headers.

Late model stock starter. Buy new from a dealer or get it used from a junk yard.

Looking at your application listed above , 383 , what's the header tube size ?

I believe 1 7/8" tube size with 3" collectors.

My headers are not on yet and I don't want to the tubes because of a starter

Do you have a flywheel or flex plate?

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

In my 70 Charger RT 4speed car,Lakewood scattershield and I am running the ceramic coated Hooker Super Comp 1 7/8 headers and a parts store mini starter.
I did not have to ding or alter my headers at all when I installed them and they have excellent clearance near the starter....but if I had to install the starter with the headers on it would not be possible.

I hope my starter works when I go to fire it up!

I went to the junkyard and got one off a dakota for $25 and it works awesome on my 440...cheap and easy.

Again, picking a starter is not the hard part, I was just looking for one that was able to clear headers without Thanks Blakcharger440

same here. I have changed many over by using junkyard minis from 90 up V6 nd V8 Dodge Dakota or full sized Dodge pichps. Used 'em on everything from Small blocks to Hemi's no problems other than a little clearancing on some of the big blocks.

Good luck , I tried a mini starter on a 383 with the 143 tooth bellhousing and no name , i think they were black jack , 1 3/4 " headers and there was no way it was going to fit , I had to hammer on the one tube to clear the std gear reduction starter as it was right up hard against the header . Most headers designs are a compromise to fit in the chassis , sometimes multiple , and the 2 different deck heights along with the different trans configurations .

oh , what exact header are you using ???

I think you need to go back to the other thread and see the post by the guy that that said the snout on his robbmc starter was a little oversize to fit in his snout register for whatever reason , this may be your issue as the robbmc starter may be your ONLY choice for a mini on a low deck with headers .

Somewhat unrelated but you'll get the idea of what you are up against with a low deck. I had to dimple the headpipe on my 69 383, 4speed Dart using stock manifolds and a mini starter because the starter is just too close to the headpipe. and this is with the 130 tooth flywheel setup, if it was the 143 tooth setup it would have been hard against the pipe and required a larger application of the

All you guys telling this member what you are using on your 440 , unless its a low deck stroked to 440 cubes , is TOTALLY USELESS INFORMATION , headers and minis fit fine on RB blocks , completely DIFFERENT STORY on a low deck , been there, smashed the tubes to prove it .

And with that said, my combo is a 450" B block, TTI 1-3/4" headers, 130T flywheel, and Robb starter. No fitment issues whatsoever. I didn't have to clearance anything.

For whatever reason, the Robb starter did not engage my flywheel. Trust me, Robb and I both TRIED to make it work. I love the design. Cleared headers perfectly. I need the next best header clearing mini starter available. And BTW, Robb is

I know 3 guys running minis with headers on B blocks.None had a problem.Mine is tight because of the 143 tooth wheel and scattershield.Junk yard starter I think not.Its too hard to change a probally 8 year old starter to take a chance.Ill pay for a new one.Rocky

Headers play a huge part in this members decision , the mini starter is WIDER than the std gear reduction starter ( at least the first one I used was), if the header isn't designed with that in mind a mini is not going to fit .

You need to also what headers they are using and is it the same header you are using, which I can't see thru my crystal ball .

Just trying to help you help yourself.

Honestly, tired of repeating myself! One more time;

71 Cuda 383 auto 727 tranny. Hooker Headers #5903HKR. 1 1/16" from starter mounting surface to surface of ring gear. Original OEM starter worked fine, but headers did not clear. Had issues with Robb Mc mini. Looking for an alternative mini that will clear without the headers! What else?

Ok , I remember that header callout now, my bad .

You may be out of luck , if you can't get the Robbmc to work and you can't get a std gear reduction starter to fit without a mini is more than likely going to fit either.

I've been there, a header that hit the gear reduction starter and I had to the header tube to get that one in there, I would have had to just about collapse the tube to half its diameter to get a mini in there and it still would have been too close to not cause heat issues later on with the starter. I also was unable to get the mini in the starter hole without unbolting the header from the engine. TTi's are designed to work around a mini but I think even they are limited to a certian tube size if I remember right.

On a plus note I was able to get a mini on a low deck with now discontinued Hedmans with 1 7/8 tubes bolted to a lakewood using a 130 tooth flywheel .

Good luck .

Consider trying this. but make sure you get the model that can be clocked. This is based on the standard MIni starter so it looks the same but has a billet snout that can be clocked. Of course it cannot be clocked as much as the Robmc starter.

I think it is the Powermaster 9523 - Powermaster XS Torque Starter, but make sure! Powermaster makes several starters and the cheaper version is the same mini starter everyone else uses that cannot be clocked.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWM-9523/

I think Summit has a pretty good return policy so call and ask.

This is the standard Mopar performance mini starter. See how similar they are? The billet adjustable snout is the difference

Don't buy this one if you want to stay away from the standard Mini starter

So I could buy a starter for.....say a 93 Dodge truck with a 360, (mini starter?) and it will work on my 69 Coronet RT stock exhaust manifolds 440/auto? No problems??
I hope Im not hi-jacking???

I run a Summit Starter on my Magnum motor. Deals with the high temps pretty good, and the header tubes are right next to it even.

I run a Summit Starter on my Magnum motor. Deals with the high temps pretty good, and the header tubes are right next to it even.

Yet on my 440 the summit would not take the heat.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I have a 440 in my '69 B-body with Hedman headers that I bought new in 1990. I have a late 90s dakota starter from the junkyard. the fit is perfect. no issues at all.

OK, returned the starter to Robb, who in turn gave me a full refund . He installed it on his partners Dodge truck and said it work everytime . I installed the Power Master 9513 on my Cuda and it worked fine . Strange, but true . Anyway, Robb is a man of his word, and we are all happy again .
