What do you guys think about using a smoke machine to find those pesky oil leaks? I have an oil leak either at the rear main, the oil filter adapter or possibly a valve cover..

A friend mechanic recommended using a smoke machine to flush out the oil leak.. I've never heard of this before and my first thought is can we create enough psi to force a leak and wanted to find out if others has done this before???

The only time I notice the leak is when the car is under load and at high rpm...

After 3 pulls on the dyno, there was an ounce or two on the ground (right rear of the motor) and the last time down the strip, I was told there was white smoke visible at about 1/2 track..

It wont be until this weekend that we can get the car up on the rack and we still have an open mind as to whats causing the smoke... But my buddy recommended trying this first..

Get a little tube of the ultraviolet detector that you just dump in your engine oil and search with your UV glasses and black light after it runs. Same way we check for AC leaks at the shop, but they ake this for all different fluids, Oil, trans, coolant, brake fluid etc.

The place where I get to work on my car is a 4 bay auto repair shop and when closed, I have full run of the shop... They do have the U/V set up and it has been offered, but my buddy seems to think the smoke trick is a better way...

Personally speaking, I'm fascinated with the idea of using smoke.. if it works like we think it should, then it would be an awesome diagnostic tool.. So I wanted to ask you guys if you've ever used it before and what are the do's and dont's??

Seeing as how you're obviously set on using your idea. Why don't you just report back to us on how well it worked? I'm interested in knowing.

smoke machines work very well for many different things use them for finding vacum leaks, oil leaks, leaks in the evap system, and even wind noises.

before you go that far...you said at 1/2 track?

check your dipstick. make sure it's held down tight. mine was loose and under full throttle, pressure would build up inside the crankcase and pop it out, spewing oil all over the headers making smoke...but It didn't smoke until the end of a run down the street, I'd give it WOT and not get any smoke till the end of 3rd gear.

i've used the dye method to trace an oil leak in the past. it was brilliant. thought i had a rear main leak but turned out the valley cover weeped at the front & the oil tracked along the head gasket & dripped off the back of the head onto the trans joint. spent a long time looking in the wrong place. if you had a small oil weep would smoke be able to detect that?

Smoke machine will do nothing to find leaks such as the rear main or oil filter adapter, it'd have to fill the oil passages .

You said it happens under full load mainly, 5 bucks says it's blow-by coming out of the valve cover at the breather.

do a compression check. I had an engine doing the same thing. only blew out oil from the front somewhere after a high rpm romp. then started smoking a bit. then noticed a lot of blowby. found the leak was coming out the vent on the fuel pump and found low compression on one cylinder. broke the top edge off a piston (probably detonation) and messed up a ring.

The smoke machine worked GREAT.. and it was actually kinda fun playing with it..

Ok, so the symptoms were oil leaking, towards the right rear of the SB motor, but only on hard accel or load..

Come to find out the RTV we used to seal the back edge of the intake manifold gave out and smoke was coming out of there just as plain as can be.. Next weekend we will pull off the intake and see why the RTV gave out..

Since we had the smoke machine out and warmed up, we decided to play around a little and found that there is a vacuum leak between the booster and the master cylinder, but only when the pedal is depressed.. Is this normal and is there supposed to be a gasket between the two?

Lastly, for those of you that have access to a smoke machine, its works very well for finding leaks..

does it have evac pan system ,check ball valves ?crankcase pressure under load high rpm causes leaks .
check breather caps some foam or wire mesh becomes loaded blocked see if dip stick creeps out under load .
