Hey All, Helping a buddy that just put a fresh 383 in his coronet. He had it running yesterday and it only has 25lb of oil pressure at idle and it increased to 45psi at max when accelerating. He didnt run it long but you could watch the clear line going to the guage and it only had oil when past 1400 rpms..I know he checked all the bearing clearances and everthing was torqued to spec... Is the Oil pump losing prime?? Its a new Melling pump, he primed it with a drill before starting the motor.. Im out of Ideas here.. Thanks

Did he put an oil pressure guage on it when he primed it ? A fresh engine should be alot higher than that . I would also try ANOTHER GUAGE especially if the one he has is offshore made Did he disassemble the pump and check it to make sure it was clean ? Does it have one of those POS ORANGE oil filters on it wit ha name beginning with the letter F ???

Yes Fram Filter, 10W40 Castrol Oil, The Guage is new, SunPro Though. We never disassembled the oil pump because it was new, are you thinking it may have something in it after initial startup? Am I wrong or should the line going to the guage have oil even at idle? Thanks

Its not unusual for the oil pressure line to have air in it so you won't see the oil in it all the time. I think 25 lb at idle is great. Better than mine.

CHANGE THE FILTER , it's GARBAGE .
I would get ANOTHER guage to check it against and yes you need to disassemble the pump others have found junk in them OUT OF THE BOX , NEVER install anything without checking it first . Is the pump a HP or HV ?
As far as oil in the line at idle , only if you BLEED it when the engine is running , the line has air in it when assembled and it has no where to go unless you bleed it out, I would do that and see what it reads ? I don't like those sunpro guages , they are cheap for a REASON ...

Not to hijack this thread, but I was a little concerned the other day when I took out my 3000 miles on the clock 496ci bee (after changing oil last month) and didn't really warm up the car for more than 4 mins or so and then hopped on the highway for a little 10 min ride to and fro the bank.
I noticed at "Cold idle" (temp outside was 65degrees) my oil pressure was 75psi. When I got on it at only 4000rpm the psi was at 95.
Once warmed up and on my way back home it was at 75 cruising at 3300rpm, hot idle was still 45psi.
I use Rotella T 15/40 and a Napa Gold, one of the best filters out there.
I know my motor is tight, but within specs. I guess this is ok for summer, but i'm hesitant to even start it in the winter at this weight.
Should I go with a lighter weight? I regularly beat the snots outa this thing.

15/40 is way too heavy for winter driving. 10/30 would be alot better.

I think that he missed this part - "I know my motor is tight, but within specs. I guess this is ok for summer, but I'm hesitant to even start it in the winter at this weight"

absolutely
Try thinner oil. It will help.
Does it have a hi volume oil pump too?
Those are great for creating unnecessarily high pressures, heat, and taking horse power.
Excessive pressures are as detrimental as not having enough. Like winter starting the motor every time you hit the key.
Hi volume oil pumps were made for restoring pressure in worn out engines. A motor built to the tight end of stock specs only requires a stock pump. Otherwise you get a situation like this .

25 and 45 isn't too bad if the motor is at operating temp. If that's at cold start, then I think it the 45 a little low.
My own motor runs 25 hot at idle, but will peak at 55 when I wind it out.
