My turn signals don't work now that the steering column is back in place. They did work before it was removed. My emergency flashers work, so I guess the bulbs should all be good. The brake lights work, so the switch should be ok? Is there a flasher somewhere I could check?
Thanks,
Jim

Yes there are two flashers one for turn signals and another for emergency lights.

I'd start at the steering col(brake/tail)plug connector and when you R&R'd the col was anything done to the TS harness/wiring

Sorry,
I had to run out.
They did work before I took out the column.
I didn't touch the wiring.
Where can I find both flashers so I can switch them and see if that's the problem?
Jim

I pulled out what appears to be the turn signal flasher, but have yet to locate the emergency one. Is there a way to test the flasher?

You could jump 12V to it & run it out to the large filaments in 2 TS bulbs in parallel but it'd probably just be easier to find the other one & switch em for a test

Does the coluum need to be grounded on your model car? Four screws and the ash tray frame comes out and the turn signal flasher is attached to it. That's after you take out the ash tray.

That must be the one then. I removed the ash tray and found one there.
I get a replacement and see if that's it.

The electroncs one are way better and will last longer and uses less juice to flash.

You say new style flasher, Is it entirely different? or just the way the new replacement parts comes?
Thanks,
Jim

Useally the cheap light duty ones are the ones our cars came with, nowadays they make electronic ones that can flash all day like in a mail delivery vehicule. They can be the same shape, but come in many sizes depending on how many bulbs you want flash. Any of the 2 prong flashers will work, but the round ones will fit your flasher bracket that attaches to the ash tray frame.

Well, it's not the flasher, because the new one won't make the blinkers work. I have the steering wheel off. but I don't know what to test. Could it be the switch even though the brake lights work?

Are they both round? The emergency flashers work, but nothing with the turn signals. Where by the fuse would it be?

the brake pedal switch sends fire to the TS switch via one wire which sends it to both brake lights in the rear(2 seperate wires)(R&L) & when you push the stalk down it keeps the right side brake light connected but opens the left side & redirects it's current to the TS flasher which intermittently opens/closes & sends current back to the TS switch & out to the drivers rear brake light(the large filament). The brake lights and the turn signals use the same large filament in each 2 filament bulb it just makes one side intermittent depending on which way(up or down) the stalk is pushed so yes eyeball the TS contact points carefully(and w your VOM) see whats not making contact that should be.

I would try to locate your other flasher,I quess you could remove the one you found and see if the emergency flasher still work if they dont then that one is for the emergency lights and there should be another one, my Demon has two. I think you might have a bad connection somewhere if the turn signals worked before you changed the steering column . John

This may be stating the obvious, but with the steering wheel removed, it's more possible the turn signal stalk - and hence, the switch - will get damaged during setting the column down somewhere. Were you quite careful handling the column out of the car? The turn signal switch can get damaged in such a way as for the brake lights and hazards to still work, but the turn signals not.

I would check continuity of the wiring in the column harness with the turn signal switch in various positions to see if there is continuity in the appropriate circuits.

I don't know how to work my scanner, but check page 8-159 in your '72 FSM.

Turn signal switch wiring:
Light green - left front.
Tan - right front.
Pink - hazard flasher.
Red - turn signal flasher.
Dark green - left rear.
Brown - right rear.
White - stop light switch.

So, with the turn signal switch off (centered) and hazards off:
Continuity with white, brown and dark green.
No continuity with anything else.

With left turn signal selected:
Continuity with red, dark green, and light green.
Continuity with white, brown.

With right turn signal selected:
Continuity with red, tan, and brown.
Continuity with white, dark green.

A much easier way, if you have a spare known-good turn signal assembly, is plug that into the car harness. Then jumper the the batt and accessory terminals on the fuse block to power the turn signal flasher, and see how that works.

Another, cruder way would be as follows:
jumper the batt and accessory terminals on the fuse block to power the turn signal flasher. Then, touch a screwdriver to the brown and dark green terminals (which are adjacent) on the car harness to activate the left rear turn signal. This will at least tell you if the flasher is working...

Good luck.

Here's where I'm at:
I plugged into the battery on the fuse block and hooked it up to the red connection on the flasher and it works with left and right when using the turn signal switch.
What I don't know, is what does that tell me?

Now it doesn't flash, but the lights right or left light up, but don't blink. The only thing I did was screw in the turn signal lever. Could that be part of the problem?

Jim you jumped 12V from the fuse box to the red input to the TS switch and moved the plastic cam up/down by hand & both t signals flashed properly(R&L) then you screwed in the stalk & used it to move the cam & they wont work. Am I reading this right?

Yes, That's what happened.
But, I started checking fuses and found my radio fuse was blown. I figured the turn signal went through one of the fuses, but I couldn't verify whether or not it did. Now I know it does. After replacing the fuse, the turn signal worked but wouldn't flash, when I replaced the flasher, it now works. I'm very happy.
Now, if I could only get my cigarette lighter to work. I've been testing it while it's been unattached, does it need to be attached and be ground to work?
Thanks to everyone for their input!
Jim

Some lighters have a seperate ground and some ground through the case when screwed into the dash. The ones with a seperate ground will have a tab on them that is pretty easy to see.

Thanks Stumpy,
I put the try back in it's place and now it works as well. Now I can use it to charge my Garmin. So far it's been a good day! My list is getting shorter...
