Have not verified this with meter but gauge shows discharge at idle than a recharge after acceleration then returns to center. Currently has 50amp alt and electronic regulator. (68 Charger)Is a higher output alt the solution? say a 75amp? Could it be something else? Thanks

Has it ever worked correctly, is this a new problem.?
IT is typical for those cars to slightly discharge at idle with the lights, or blower motor on.
The alternator will just barely power the brake lights without discharging. At idle..
Correct Pulleys, corroded wires, amps for the Stereo are possible reasons.
Also if you have a weak or bad alternator diode, you will have the same problem.
Putting a larger alternator will fry the wiring, check the tech archives..

have the alt checked first,IMO

weak diodes slowly show up

and a 68..I would not go with more juice with out some mods and bypass of the ampmeter gauge and get it out of the bulkhead connector and gauge cluster

You might check your voltage drops and or clean EVERY terminal/connection for a start. Unless you have rewired it(some of)those connections have been untouched for over 4 decades

i agree, my 65 Cuda (stock charging system right down to teh mechanical regulator) doesn't discharge at idle, anymore. Nice and bright, but I haven't tried it with the AC on, simply because I haven't gotten the AC working yet, not too hot on an R134 conversion and R12 is too expensive.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I don't see how a higher output alternator would help anything. Discharge at idle is due to not enough voltage from the alternator. A higher output alternator would have higher gauge wire inside, thus, it would have fewer windings, reducing voltage for a given rpm. It could handle more current at higher rpms, but that's not your problem.

What's the idle rpm's set at?
