My 64 polara has a bad trans leak. I am pretty sure it is a front seal leak. A few trans shops said it could be a bad bushing in the torque converter. Is this true? I thought the torque converter was sealed up by the front seal of the trans. Thanx guys

yes the front pump seal seals the TC & worst case it could be a bad bushing which is behind the seal & the TC snout goes thru the seal then thru the bushing then engages the front pump. I would pull the trans back, take out the TC & R&R the front pump seal & put it back together. odds are you will be fine.

Agree with RR ... also .. when you pull that old seal ... you can look at the bushing. If it is loose OR it has damaged the hub of the converter - you should then change the bushing also.

Change the bushing while you have it out. And the gasket around the pump. I'd do the shift selector seal too. And the neutral safety switch seal. Had them all leak at one time or another.

A bad bushing will cuase a new seal to fail pretty quick.

i had a bad front bushing. it spun and basically trashed the whole tranny very quickly. sent lots of metal everywhere. if i ever have one start leaking fluid from the front it is coming out immediately. my tranny guy said that the bushing holds the fluid in more than the seal so if you have a leak in front its most likely the bushing. the bushing had seized onto the converter. trashed the front pump, planetaries, rear over-running clutch, valvebody, and a drum, oh and of course the converter. better get it looked at
