Should I lay down a primer coat
or go straight base / clear over the black primer

Piece is a AMD hood

With the small amount of repro metal I have worked with I have taken it down to bare metal. I do not trust the quality of whatever paint/primer they apply to the parts.

I would sand/scuff the black e-coat, or whatever it's called, and then prime over it.

Agree....I would block it to see how straight it is as well.

If it's straight you don't need to prime it. So just scuff/sand it with 320 grit paper. Clean it really good and your ready to seal it. Use any 2 component sealer before you apply the color/clear.

Todays 'E-Coat Primers' are much better than they used to be because of stricter gov't regulations. If it has a yellow "CAPA" sticker on the backside then its as good as it gets. Unless you buy OEM.

We scuff it and lay primer on it but thats because they are never straight enough and need to be blocked if not cut, welded and fixed.

On collision work if its not dented we scuff it with red scotch brite and paint it. No primer.
