Need to replace the power steering pump on a 70 Duster. 340 automatic with air. What pump was originally used? Also how do you remove the pulley from the old one? Thanks Ray

I think that you could get two types of pumps, but don't quote me on that.

The pulley can be removed and installed with a special tool. Most repair shops can swap the pulley over for you for a couple $$$ or you can buy the tool through Lisle.

From what I have found available they have a Federal pump or a Saginaw pump. How do I tell the 2 apart?

I think that will be the saginaw pump, my 70 dart 318 had a saginaw, the saginaw is shaped more like a teardrop and the federal is more roundish. The pulley remover tool can be purchased from a parts store relatively cheap and are self explanitory. I would rec'd though b4 you try and pull the pulley to run a 3/8's course thread tap through the pilot.

federal has the round filler tube and the saginaw has and oval filler tube... Very different looking from each other..

Look at the pics here for your pump, it shows either style as acceptable fits. http://www.racepages.com/products/?N=1696+4294963021+11488+4294966294+2559

T/A's and AAR's got the Federal pump - I don't have a 70 340 A-body with power steering to comment on. I have a '71 Demon 340 - I'll check that.

The 1970 Duster 340 should have the round "Federal pump" with the 3 spoke pulley that is pressed on to the shaft. If it had the 318 it could have the Saginaw style or Federal style with the solid pulley.
