I am installing new AMD quarters, Deck lid, Trunk gutters, and Filler panel on a 70 Challenger. The door to quarter gaps are at 3/16 and look good. The best I can get for quarter to deck lid is 1/4 which looks a little too big. What is an acceptable body gap. I know they were not great on these cars even when new but I would like to know if this is acceptable.
Thanks,
Mark

1/4" sounds tolerable so long as it's consistant.

There are ways to correct the gaps if your willing to do the work. This is the trunklid to quarter gap on my brother's 68 Olds. They sliced it with a cut off wheel and then pryed it over and rewelded fixing the uneven gap in the process.

After welding. The metal still needs to be smoothed over, but you get the idea.

One side is real nice and straight and the other side is not. I think I will take my time and get it right now.
Thanks,
Mark

1/4" is fine,....make allowences for primer and paint build up, esp if using high build primers, and premium based BC/CC as they will have a heavier volume or build on edges,......3/16", looks nice but can quickly become 1/8" after all the paint work,....and if it's on the edge turning into a panel (front door edge for ex.), the paint may contact and chip,....with the "tolerances/panel shape/contour" of older cars I personally shoot for 1/4" gaps on raw steel edges, knowing when I'm done painting the car, the gaps will be approx 3/16 finish

Thanks, I never thought about allowing for the primer and paint build up. That makes me happy, I only need to straighten one edge. I can adjust the doors and fenders to achieve 1/4" all around.
Thanks again,
Mark
