Burnt another wire...at least it's one wire and not like 6 on the old set of headers I used to run! Just wondering if anyone else has had issues and what theve done to resolve it. TTI B Block 1 7/8" headers on a 383 w/ 516 stock heads. Everything else fits fine, but it's like the #3 electrode is almost right on header. I barely have room to get the boot on. I am thinking about a shorty accell plug, but resisting it becasue I don't need shortys for the other seven. Here's pictures... Burnt high temp boot Last one...

I wish there was a way to extend the electrode on a spark plug...ohhh well. I was worried if I dimple these headers the coating will come off and it will rust? Any truth to that? I'm sure TTI did mention it...I am just trying to get ideas from others whove been there. All in all they are WAY better than my old headers which threw off so much heat, leaked, and burnt at least 4 or 5 wires regularly. It's almost embarrasing to admit i have a small problem with these TTI's! I just wish they would have clearanced this tube a bit a head of time. They had to have mocked it up on a stock headed 383/400 and found this issue. It's a whole lot easier for them to do it before coating IMHO. New heads would be great! But my $$ are already wrapped up in other things so spending 2k to fix a spark plug wire problem is a bit spendy. Thanks for the ideas though.

For the price of them they should install themselves .
The practically do. I installed a set last week in less then 2hrs. Do that with a set of Hookers or worse, Flowtecks.

I think my hedmans went in in a lil over an hour - took more time to get everything ready than to put em in
I went from 1 7/8 to 1 3/4 hedmans.......just got sick of dealing with wire issues. Got a set of Firecores and everything has been great since, even picked up a little throttle response on the bottom end.

Just ordered a set for my 66 Ply Satellite with 383 and stock 516 re-worked heads. However I went with the 1 3/4's as opposed to 1 7/8's per their/TTI's web site. I will be using the Taylor 8mm wires with protective boots so hopefully there won't be a problem. One question though...how was the actual install for ya. My 383 is out of the car so would it be advisable to mount them out of the car or is it easier with the engine motor in? Hopefully I won't have the slight QC problems you experienced but if some massaging is required and welding cleanup needed then I have that covered as well. I will be following this post to see how things work out for you....
if you went 1 3/4", you coulda saved yourself a lot of coin by getting the hedman elites--IIRC they go over the steering like the TTI's, have thick flanges and heavy gage tubes like the TTI's, and are 1/2 the cost.
either way, I've found it easiest to put the headers in the car and drop the engine in. another easy way would be to drop the K frame, bolt the engine (with headers on) on it, and lower the car to it.

Maybe for the 400 stroker build in a couple of years. Who knows by then I might have a real 340 car which will have the same amount of power with less weight and alot more room in the engine bay.

Great pics. Shorty plugs are the answer. We have had nearly a dozen customers with the same problem. Nothing you can do. We do have a variety of heat shields, for 90's and 180's. Go to the website and go to make your own set. It will show you a small number of heat shields and boot combos.. www.customwiresets.com

I have the same headers but on Edelbrock heads and STILL tight. Bottomline they are $$$ and still rust. UGH. NEXT TIME I will go with manifolds or SS. WHO MAKES SS? I'd pay TWICE what I paid for the TTI's. I think XV makes em but not for torsion bar equiped Mopars. Could just send these guys my set of dented-to-fit (by the bellhousing) TTI's to copy in SS! http://www.stainlessheaders.com/customheaders

Well I went ahead and dimpled them. What paint or selaer can i put on these to prevent rust, etc. I stuck with the standard autolites. I tried a shorty, but I didn't like where the electrode ended up. I can fit a sleeve on there now though.

Thanks for posting that link, I've been hunting around for stainless on line & that website had never come up before.

Whats diff between 409SS and other types. Maybe I could ASK TTI if they can duplicate thier headers outta SS.
I'll contact them today.
Wonder what wall thickness?
400 series stainless is magnetic. it gets it's corrosion resistance from high chromium content, IIRC. it has good workability, weldability. most OEM exhaust systems on cars since the late early 90's are 400 series stainless. the Y pipe on my 5th ave ('86) was 409, had a coat of surface corrosion on it, but still solid as a rock when I took it to the metal recyclers in '07...car spent it's life either in michigan or on the california shore, so it had a fair amount of salt exposure.
300 series stainless is non-magnetic, gets most of it's corrosion resistance from high nickel content. it's more expensive, can be polished, bends ok (not as good as 400 series), somewhat susceptible to thermal fatigue--cracks can develop in welds with lots of thermal cycling, much pricier than 400 series
granted it's not as pretty, but I prefer 400 series for exhaust work. it's cheaper and more resistant to thermal fatigue. it can be ceramic coated if you want it pretty.

Let me know if you find out anything.
I sent an email yesterday asking the cost of a stainless set of headers & was told they'd be around $1300 for 304 SS, & $1100 for mild steel. Too much for my budget, but probably not out of line for custom work. I suppose if you had a car that nobody made headers at all for, it would be the way to go.

I was wondering when you actually post a picture.

Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first.
Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Wow - guess the angled plugs on my Edelbrocks really helped me there. Never knew.
