Burnt another wire...at least it's one wire and not like 6 on the old set of headers I used to run!

Just wondering if anyone else has had issues and what theve done to resolve it.

TTI B Block 1 7/8" headers on a 383 w/ 516 stock heads. Everything else fits fine, but it's like the #3 electrode is almost right on header. I barely have room to get the boot on. I am thinking about a shorty accell plug, but resisting it becasue I don't need shortys for the other seven.

i don't know if shorty plugs would solve your problem or not - i considered them just as an "in case" measure, but i heard they really aren't much shorter than the regular plugs - might have to do some hammering

definetly have to run shorty plugs, I just put some NGKs in mine. It runs great with em. TTI warns you about this in there instructions I believe. That's where I learned about it. I also run those heat sleeves over my boots for extra insurance.

I have 2 imch on my 440 and just tapped that tube a bit.I run Taylors and have never burnt a boot.Mine have been on 9 years running regular plugs.Rocky

This is definetely a boo boo on the design of these. For this reason, I will not buy that header from the them. I had the same problem on a customers car once. Had to remove, dimple, and blow in some coating.

Yea heat it and dint it in OR buy new heads with angle plugs.

I wish there was a way to extend the electrode on a spark plug...ohhh well.

I was worried if I dimple these headers the coating will come off and it will rust? Any truth to that?

I'm sure TTI did mention it...I am just trying to get ideas from others whove been there.

All in all they are WAY better than my old headers which threw off so much heat, leaked, and burnt at least 4 or 5 wires regularly. It's almost embarrasing to admit i have a small problem with these TTI's!

I just wish they would have clearanced this tube a bit a head of time. They had to have mocked it up on a stock headed 383/400 and found this issue. It's a whole lot easier for them to do it before coating IMHO.

New heads would be great! But my $$ are already wrapped up in other things so spending 2k to fix a spark plug wire problem is a bit spendy.

Thanks for the ideas though.

Just ordered a set for my 66 Ply Satellite with 383 and stock 516 re-worked heads. However I went with the 1 3/4's as opposed to 1 7/8's per their/TTI's web site. I will be using the Taylor 8mm wires with protective boots so hopefully there won't be a problem. One question though...how was the actual install for ya. My 383 is out of the car so would it be advisable to mount them out of the car or is it easier with the engine motor in? Hopefully I won't have the slight QC problems you experienced but if some massaging is required and welding cleanup needed then I have that covered as well. I will be following this post to see how things work out for you....

For the price of them they should install themselves and not burn your wires.

Don't get me wrong I am very happy with the TTI's. They went in easily. I installed them with the car on jact stands and the motor/Tranny in. the only trick I had to do was i had to turn the wheel all the way (forgot the direction) when installing either side. After we figured that out they went in very easily with a guy on top and my pushing them in from below. They are still Headers though and they don't bolt on by themselves... Having studs on the ends helped. And Don't forget about the starter and have it prewired too BTW.

I wanted the 1 3/4" ones but I got a great deal on the larger ones. They were slightly used (never ran)and a couple bucks less. Plus no shipping so I jumped at them. I figure i will go the stroker route one of these days and the headers will help in that regard.

I am afraid I will have to clearance them is the way it sounds. I have a spare wire with a heat shield thingy jambed in there for now.

I will try a shorty plug. IIRC they are only shorter by about 3/8" which may be enough.

I tell ya what though...it's crap like this that makes me wish I had a 340 car! It's down right annoying to change plugs on this car at times...I love those angled sb heads and the sb is SOOO small compared to a BB in these B bodies.

Ive installed 3 sets of the 1-7/8" 440 headers and never had that problem. Are all the 383 headers like that ?

I went from 1 7/8 to 1 3/4 hedmans.......just got sick of dealing with wire issues. Got a set of Firecores and everything has been great since, even picked up a little throttle response on the bottom end.

if you went 1 3/4", you coulda saved yourself a lot of coin by getting the hedman elites--IIRC they go over the steering like the TTI's, have thick flanges and heavy gage tubes like the TTI's, and are 1/2 the cost.

either way, I've found it easiest to put the headers in the car and drop the engine in. another easy way would be to drop the K frame, bolt the engine (with headers on) on it, and lower the car to it.

Maybe for the 400 stroker build in a couple of years.

Who knows by then I might have a real 340 car which will have the same amount of power with less weight and alot more room in the engine bay.

Great pics. Shorty plugs are the answer. We have had nearly a dozen customers with the same problem. Nothing you can do. We do have a variety of heat shields, for 90's and 180's. Go to the website and go to make your own set. It will show you a small number of heat shields and boot combos.. www.customwiresets.com
